Opened in Fall 2014 in the heart of Manhattan, the 200,000 ft at CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) offers a highly interactive and collaborative environment that integrates structural biologists with colleagues in neuroscience, photonics, nanoscience and environmental sciences. Combining world-class experts in these areas with state-of-the-art instrumentation both at the ASRC and at the adjacent New York Structural Biology Center, including several FEI Titan and Krios cryo-electron microscopes, the ASRC offers a unique opportunity for research programs to flourish among normally-disparate fields

The ASRC will operate as a nucleus of a University-wide science enterprise, fostering the development of an integrated research network that brings together faculty, students, and postdoctoral fellows from CUNY’s colleges across the five boroughs (http://asrc.cuny.edu/).

We are seeking highy motiviated applicants to apply for a Post-doctoral Research Associate position in the new Structural Biology Initiative Laboratory of Dr. Amedee des Georges. This position is fully funded and is available in the area of structural biology. This position, available starting in February 2017, is initially for twelve months with the possibility of a further extension. The research will be carried out within the lab of Dr. Amedee des Georges, with an ambitious research team with a cross-disciplinary focus. The des Georges lab uses state of the art cryo-electron microscopy to study the structure, function and dynamics of large macromolecular complexes involved in cell homeostasis.

The successful applicant will have a proven track record of peer reviewed publications in high quality journals, excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well independently or as part of a team. A PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering or chemistry is essential.

Responsibilities include but not limited to: - Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties. - Carry out experimental research in the area of structural biology. - Collaborates with internal and external academic colleagues, and participates in knowledge exchange activities to establish research links with industry. - Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data. - Conduct individual and/or collaborative research, and contribute to the development of new research methods and ideas, giving direction to the project. - Play a lead role in the development and planning of research objectives within this specific project and to contribute to the development of research objectives as part of the wider research program within the group, with guidance from the academic supervisor, as required. - Provide daytoday supervision of undergraduate and graduate student projects, giving advice to students and supervising practical work. - Write up research findings for progress reports and publications, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and disseminate results as appropriate in leading peer reviewed journal publications and presentation at national and international conferences. - Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS - Demonstrated expertise at working across and within disciplines. - Evidence of active conference participation. - Experience in an area of science or engineering relating to molecular biology and structural biology. - Experience in expression an purification of membrane proteins. - Experience in protein/RNA purification, X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, model-building or molecular modeling are a plus. - Experience in reconstitution of membrane proteins into lipid bilayer. - Experience in single- and multi- channel conductance measurements. - Experience of supervising students at the undergraduate level. - Expertise in a experimental or theoretical area of molecular biology, structural biology and membrane protein chemistry. - Publication of results in high quality journals.
