Job Description: The research group of Prof. Scott Hertel at UMass Amherst invites applications for postdoctoral scholars. Research and responsibilities will involve two dark matter direct detection projects, with a division of effort tuned to the candidate's expertise and interest. These two projects are 1) the LZ experiment, a large-collaboration enterprise that will soon have world-leading sensitivity to standard WIMP models and 2) R&D into dark matter detection based on superfluid 4He, using meV-scale kinetic excitations (rotons) to observe sub-eV nuclear recoils at mK temperatures. The appointment will begin in Summer or early Fall 2017, and is for a term of 1 year with the possibility of multiple one-year reappointments assuming satisfactory performance and availability of funding. Appointments include competitive salary, benefits, and travel funding. Candidates from a variety of research backgrounds will be considered, assuming significant experience in a hands-on laboratory setting.

Requirements: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in some branch of experimental physics. Preferred qualifications include data analysis experience within a particle physics context, laboratory experience with vacuum and cryogenic systems, or laboratory experience with sensitive electronics such as SQUIDs or related technologies.

Application Instructions: Applicants must apply online at http://umass.interviewexchange.com/jobofferdetails.jsp?JOBID=83609.
