Position Description:

*** this position has been closed, and no new applications will be accepted. ***

A 3 year limited appointment is open for a doctoral student to train towards a PhD (Dr Rer Nat) in the group of Guy D. Moore, in the theory division of the Institute for Nuclear Physics, TU Darmstadt. The position can be filled as soon as an outstanding candidate is identified.

Project description: The student will work on the project A07 "Transport Coefficients" within the Coordinated Research Center Transregional 211 (CRC-TR 211). Specifically, the student will work in 3-dimensional lattice gauge theory, to investigate the transport coefficient q-hat through measurement of novel modified Wilson loops. This work has applications within heavy ion physics, in jet quenching phenomenology. As a participant in the CRC-TR 211, the student will also have broad exposure to current problems in high-temperature and nonequilibrium Quantum Chromodynamics, and is expected to actively participate in collaboration meetings and events, as well as to give regular oral presentations.

Candidate profile: Only candidates who have completed or are close to completing a masters degree in physics need apply. The ideal candidate has an excellent academic track record, expertise in numerical work and coding (preferably including SIMD such as SSE4/AVX/AVX512), and a solid background in quantum field theory, especially gauge theory. Background in lattice gauge theory is not necessary but is a plus. Solid writing and communication skills are important, especially in English.

Salary and conditions: The position is paid at 65% of the E13 wage level of the German government. TU Darmstadt is an equal opportunity employer and we especially encourage applications from outstanding women.

Application: Interested students should send application materials to and should arrange for transcripts and at least two letters of reference to be sent independently to the same address.
