Position Description:    

Assistant/Associate Director for Science Programs at CHESS

The Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) in Ithaca, New York, USA has an opening for an Assistant/Associate Director for Science Programs. A member of the senior management team, this position oversees CHESS’s scientific and technical programs. Responsibilities include helping to identify scientific priorities, coordinating resources to accomplish research goals, reporting and communicating research accomplishments, managing relations between research groups, and working to build and sustain a portfolio of laboratory and research funding. In addition, as a member of the scientific staff, the successful candidate may work on research projects aligned to her/his research interests. This position will supervise and mentor undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, as well as professional technical and scientific staff members.

The successful candidate should have proven ability to carry out a personal research program, direct scientific programs, establish diverse scientific collaborations, and have a strong record of obtaining and sustaining sponsored research support. Experience leading multidisciplinary research groups is a significant plus. A PhD in any area of physical, life, or engineering sciences and at least 10 years of relevant post-PhD experimental experience is preferred. A solid publication record, fluency in the English language, and excellent communication skills are essential. This appointment will be at the Cornell level of Senior Research Associate, for a five year term, and is renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

It is a National Science Foundation-supported National User Facility dedicated to novel studies in the materials, biological, and engineering sciences and to developing novel x-ray technology and has a strong service and team-oriented environment.
