Position Description:    

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has an immediate opening for an Assistant Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving. The ECE Department, part of the College of Engineering (COE), is a diverse academic community of nearly 1,400 individuals (faculty, staff and students) and 8,000+ active alumni. ECE includes global research and teaching efforts through extensions of our Pittsburgh academic programs and research in Silicon Valley, Portugal, Africa, and Singapore.

The overarching goal of this position is to define, develop, and drive the execution and measurement of a modern integrated plan for global engagement, alumni relations, and annual giving across a broad range of constituencies. Our constituencies include alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents, and “friends.” We are looking for a creative leader who understands and embraces a fully integrated approach to engagement with alumni and other constituencies, combined with and leading to annual giving and potentially more significant gifts.

This position is part of both the ECE External Relations team and the joint ECE and School of Computer Science (SCS) Office of Engagement and Annual Giving. Additionally, this role is a key member of the COE Development Partners and will collaborate extensively with COE staff on development strategy.

You will have demonstrated expertise in higher education development and alumni relations and a consistent track record of broad-based development and driving participation. Additionally, you have a consistent record of fundraising, development of annual gifts and participation levels, as well as growing engagement with alumni and internal and external constituencies. You will possess demonstrated project management and leadership skills in a higher education research environment, reporting of outcomes, excellent oral and written communication, and solid analytical skills including defining, applying, and interpreting metrics for fundraising, participation and alumni relations, problem solving and high-level organization skills. You will exhibit dynamic interpersonal skills across constituencies and backgrounds, and can expand relationships into measurable financial support and participation.

Responsibilities: - Clearly define a strategy and specific (measurable) goals for growing engagement and annual giving participation - Optimize existing, and craft new, engagement and annual giving programs Coordinate with alumni relations, annual giving, major gift, and development efforts at the college and university levels - Build and execute a volunteer management program that focuses on utilizing alumni and other volunteers to amplify staff and faculty efforts at engagement and fundraising - Be a voice for CMU and ECE to the more than 8,000 alumni of ECE; and vice versa Work with the ECE Head on Alumni Council events, communications and engagement activities - Working closely with colleagues in SCS, organize alumni events in multiple cities as well as on campus (e.g. during Homecoming and Carnival) to engage alumni and convey the messages about annual giving and engagement in appropriate ways

Qualifications: - 5 years or more of growing responsibility and a proven track record across alumni relations, development/fundraising/participation, and institutional advancement - Experience with integrated alumni relations, annual giving, and volunteer management - Experience with faculty, staff, student, and parent fundraising is a strong plus - Ability to craft, plan, and execute multi-faceted strategy for an engagement and annual giving program across constituencies - Experience defining, applying, and interpreting metrics for alumni relations and fundraising - Event creation, management, and coordination capabilities - Demonstrated project management and leadership skills in a higher education research environment - Experience building and managing a budget, including events. - Exceptional oral and written communication skills - Outstanding interpersonal skills with a variety of constituencies, backgrounds, and roles
