Director, Investment Responsibility / Stakeholder Relations


Job Purpose:
The Director will manage Stanford’s Investment Responsibility Stakeholder Relations office and serve as Stanford’s primary resource on issues related to investment responsibility stakeholder relations.  In addition to advising and supporting the President’s Office, this position will perform the core duties listed.

Core Duties*:

  • Serve as the liaison between the Office of the President and the many constituencies of the university on issues related to investment responsibility stakeholder relations, including the Trustees, faculty, administration, staff, students and the general public.
  • Advise, support and serve as principal staff for the Board of Trustees’ Special Committee on Investment Responsibility (SCIR) and the Advisory Panel on Investment Responsibility (APIRL), a community panel that considers a range of investment responsibility issues.  In this role the Director will:
    • Collaborate with the SCIR Chair and the Office of the Secretary of the Board of Trustees to plan meeting agendas, draft materials, conduct research and compile background materials, take meeting minutes and coordinate communications.
    • Administer the APIRL including (i) initiating and facilitating appointment of panel members, (ii) educating panel members APIRL process and Stanford policies, (iii) planning and scheduling APIRL meetings and other activities, (iv) taking APIRL meeting minutes, (v) screening all requests for APIRL review to ensure they meet the established threshold for action, (vi) writing reports summarizing APIRL activities and decisions, and (vii) communicating about APIRL activities with Stanford community.
    •  Maintain historical documentation of policies, research, meetings, and actions taken by SCIR and APIRL.
  • Update and inform the President’s Office and the SCIR members on matters of investment responsibility stakeholder relations. 
  • Coordinate with the Stanford Management Company on matters of investment responsibility stakeholder relations.
  • Monitor trends, and plan and conduct research as requested by SCIR, the President and/or the APIRL.   Identify and engage experts as requested, and coordinate presentations by experts. 
  • Educate students and other Stanford constituencies on issues related to investment responsibility including sponsoring expert panels and holding town halls on relevant issues.

Minimum Requirements:

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience in corporate social responsibility /stakeholder engagement and program/project management, or combination of education and relevant experience.  Master’s degree in public policy a plus.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Knowledgeable about investment responsibility issues and practices.
  • Public relations or communications experience and experience at an educational institution desired.
  • Able to work and communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, including members of the Board of Trustees, Stanford’s senior leadership, students, alumni and the press.
  • Knowledgeable about environmental and social issues as related to corporate social responsibility.
  • Able to think analytically and assess environmental and social issues that may guide Stanford’s response to stakeholder questions.
  • Able to collect, evaluate and synthesize complex and diverse information into concise, coherent and well-written reports and presentations.

Physical Requirements*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds;
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
