Position Description:    

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) at Arizona State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with advanced expertise in social science research methods and statistics. Anticipated start date is August 2018. This position is part of a cluster of hires, in collaboration with ASU’s Institute for Social Science Research (https://issr.asu.edu), to advance the university’s global leadership in social science methods innovation and training. Applicants sought must have an established record of research that deploys advanced social science research methods studying pressing social questions that fit the intellectual mission of the School (https://geoplan.asu.edu/), and with a capacity to teach advanced statistics to undergraduate and graduate students in the range of social science programs. We are looking for someone passionate about teaching an undergraduate course on applied multivariate statistics for social sciences, and someone whose areas of research are in urban planning or geography.

The successful candidate will teach advanced social science research methods and statistics (graduate and undergraduate levels), provide mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students, conduct collaborative research, generate peer-reviewed research and external-funding, engage in service to the university and profession, and develop productive relationships with faculty both within and beyond the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning.

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) advances the Arizona Board of Regents' (ABOR) mission and strategic objectives through integrated and interdisciplinary academia. SGSUP advances geospatial knowledge for a complex world, emphasizing education, research, and applied solutions to urban and environmental problems. SGSUP houses research centers, including The Spatial Analysis Research Center (SPARC) and Urban Climate Research Center (UCRC), and has a recognized strength in urban planning and social equity, transportation, earth surface processes, urban systems analysis, and human environmental systems. SGSUP’s personnel includes 40+ faculty (3 members of the National Academy of Science), approximately 150 graduate students, and over 1,000 undergraduate students. SGSUP has an MA and PhD program in Geography, a PhD in Urban Planning, an accredited professional Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning, a Master of Advanced Studies in Geographical Information Systems, and graduate certificate programs in GIS and Transportation. Undergraduates major in geography, geographical information science, or urban planning, and majors and non-majors alike can obtain a certificate in Geographic Information Science. SGSUP is a major participant in the instructional and research activities of ASU, and have faculty affiliated with many other schools across the university.

Minimum qualifications: •Ph.D. in geography, GIS, earth systems processes, spatial analysis, planning, climatology, computational statistics, or related field by the time of appointment •A strong record of research accomplishments appropriate to time since PhD •A record of or well-articulated commitment to excellence in teaching

Desired qualifications: •Demonstrated potential in obtaining external-funding •Experience or interest in teaching in a variety of modalities (e.g. classroom, hybrid, online) •Demonstrated record of collaborative experiences with interdisciplinary research teams •Demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities
