The Duke University English Department invites nominations and applications for a distinguished writer with a national or international reputation for a one-semester or one-year position as Artist in Residence, relying on the Blackburn Endowment. We seek candidates who are committed to the teaching of writing to undergraduates. The ideal candidate will be a writer with at least one published book, as well as other distinguished publications, and have experience in teaching undergraduate students. Candidates should be committed to engaging with the literary and intellectual life of the English department, which includes public readings as well as faculty workshops and/or working groups. A PhD in English or MFA is preferred. 

The position begins either September 1, 2023 or January 1, 2024 and ends either December 31, 2023 or April 30, 2024. We will also consider applications from candidates wishing to take up the position in September 2024 or January 2025. Residency in Durham, North Carolina is required, as is proof of covid-19 vaccination.
