Schleifer Family Professor of Sustainability

The Department of Global Development invites applications for a new faculty position to study human population dynamics in the US and around the world in the context of environmental change. The successful candidate will be nominated to hold the inaugural appointment as the Schleifer Family Professor of Sustainability. Upon confirmation, the professorship will be held for an initial five-year period, with possibility of renewal.

With a rapidly globalizing world population of 10 billion, efforts to save the planet, leave no one behind, and broadly advance sustainable development objectives must include deep scholarship on demographic change as both a cause and a consequence of environmental change. Adaptive responses such as migration have profound implications for food security, poverty and inequality, and the global politics of climate action. Large-scale population movements are already underway and are expected to accelerate in the decade ahead due to flooding, extreme heat, and prolonged droughts — stresses that are often exacerbated by conflict, resource scarcity, and tenuous livelihood systems.

We seek a colleague whose research program addresses grand challenges at the nexus of population dynamics and sustainable development by characterizing the patterns, drivers, and consequences of population movements on the environment. Ideally, candidates should be adept at the evaluation of response options, including disaster risk reduction and livelihood improvements, towards the development of effective public policy solutions. Candidates who explore these critical issues through a range of disciplinary lenses (e.g., demography, geography, environmental sciences, sociology, and related fields) and work within transdisciplinary teams are strongly encouraged to apply. Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has recently defined five Transdisciplinary Moonshots to guide strategic research and collaboration. This position may contribute to initiatives under this strategic vision. The successful candidate could also affiliate with and/or receive institutional support from several relevant schools, centers, and initiatives on campus, including the Cornell Population Center, the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, the Brooks School of Public Policy, and the Migrations Initiative.

The department welcomes applications for candidates at the Associate or Full Professor levels. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a strong program of externally funded research commensurate with rank, advise undergraduate and graduate students, and teach 2.5 courses annually. We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience in community engaged teaching and can contribute to our department's "engaged major."

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have a PhD in population, environment, or development studies or in a related discipline.
