The Department of History at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in African American History before 1820. We are open to a broad range of research specializations that center the Black experience. We seek an emerging scholar to strengthen our well-established program, which has a history of vibrant enrollments and excellent graduate placement. The successful candidate will teach existing courses in Early African American history and slavery and will have the opportunity to develop new courses for graduates and undergraduates on the slave trade, the Black Atlantic, and/or other topics of their choosing. We seek a creative teacher and scholar who will help advance the Department’s mission of recruiting and retaining a diverse student body, including first-generation students.

The successful hire will join a department with many related areas of strength, including Early America, environment and food, gender and sexuality studies, Native America, race and ethnicity, war and violence, the rise of modern capitalism, and Latin American history. OSU’s many departments and centers, especially Global Arts + Humanities Discovery Theme, Ethnic Studies, the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, the Americas Before 1900 Workshop, and the Department of African and African American Studies, present opportunities for rich collaboration and scholarly community across disciplines. The History department values research and teaching engagement on and beyond the campus community.
