Department of Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Science, York University

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a full-time professorial stream tenure-track appointment in theoretical physics at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2023. Applicants should be theorists with an ongoing program of research in one or more of the following areas: elementary particle physics, astro-particle physics, and cosmology.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has strong research groups in high energy physics, astrophysics, atomic/molecular/optical physics (including laser physics), and biophysics. Faculty regularly engage and collaborate with researchers at CERN, the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, Fermilab, the Fields Institute, J-PARC, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, and TRIUMF.

Candidates’ research should complement the Department’s existing theoretical research (e.g., early universe, QCD, astro-particle, or BSM physics), experimental high energy physics programs (e.g., ATLAS, T2K, DUNE), or astrophysics programs (e.g., galaxy formation and evolution, the CMB, large-scale structure, supermassive black holes). The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, externally funded research program, supervise graduate students, foster research linkages within and beyond York, and play an active role in widely promoting York's endeavours in research and education.

Further information about the Department and York University can be found at https://www.yorku.ca/science/physics/.

To guarantee full consideration, completed applications should be received by Monday, November 21, 2022.

Candidate Qualifications:

• Degree: A PhD in Physics or a related discipline is required along with relevant postdoctoral experience.

• Research Expertise: Research excellence of a recognized international calibre in elementary particle physics, astro-particle physics, and/or cosmology, as evident in: the research statement; innovative and impactful peer-reviewed publications (including forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; research presentations at conferences and/or seminars; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of standing.

• Teaching: Commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship (including the promise of excellence) at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as evident in: the teaching statement; teaching and mentorship accomplishments; ideas for pedagogical innovations (e.g., high-priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning); discussion of teaching and/or mentorship in letters of reference; and suitability for graduate-level supervision.

Hiring Policies:

• Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens, permanent residents and Indigenous peoples in Canada will be given priority.
