We invite applications for a PhD student position (fixed term, 36 months, salary level E 13 TV-L, 65%) in the new research group on Early Universe Cosmology of Prof. Dr. Julia Harz within the Theoretical High Energy Physics (THEP) Group at the University of Mainz. The research interests of the group lie in theoretical particle physics of the early Universe, in particular connected, but not limited to, dark matter physics, baryogenesis and neutrino physics. Our investigations tackle both phenomenology and the advancement of methods.
The earliest possible starting date is October 1st 2022, but should not be later than December 2022. The prospective candidate is expected to have successfully completed a university degree and to have pursued a Master project within a topic of theoretical particle physics or a closely related field. A substantial knowledge of quantum field theory is required.
With around 31000 students from over 120 nations, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest and most diverse universities in Germany. JGU enjoys global eminence as a research-driven university and won in Germany's competitive Excellence Strategy program the cluster of excellence PRISMA+ (Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter). PRISMA+ hosts the Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics (MITP) which provides unique opportunities for cross-disciplinary exchange between researchers from different fields of expertise in theoretical physics by holding a series of scientific programs and short topical workshops to attract leading international researchers. The prospective PhD candidate will be able to take advantage of this fruitful, international environment and will get exposed to its rich scientific atmosphere from early on.
The application should include a letter of motivation (including your earliest possible starting date), a CV, your latest transcripts of records of the Bachelor and Master studies and a pdf copy of the Master thesis (or abstract if not yet available). In addition, the applicant should arrange for at least two letters of recommendation.
All application documents (including the reference letters) should be submitted via Academic Jobs Online before July 20th 2022.
Later applications will be considered until the position is filled.
JGU is diverse and welcomes qualified applications from people with varied backgrounds. We aim to increase the proportion of underrepresented groups and therefore encourage researchers of these groups to apply. Besides, candidates with severe disabilities and appropriate qualifications will be given priority when equally qualified.
