Developing innovative methods to track our health and well-being quantitatively has played an essential role in pushing the frontiers of healthcare. Due to advances in wearable technologies, measuring vital signs is now commonplace in the comforts of our very homes. However, continuously monitoring biophysical and biochemical signals within a living biological system (with minimal to zero perturbation) has proven to be much more challenging. Achieving such a feat will enable improved diagnostics and treatment and likely require an interdisciplinary approach that combines expertise from diverse research areas, including biomedical engineering, chemistry, materials science, instrumentation, and data science/artificial intelligence. The Gerecht Lab at BME Duke is collaborating with Nokia Bell Labs to create innovative solutions in this challenging space, we encourage motivated candidates to reach out and apply today!

What You Will Learn and Contribute To: You will have the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary research group with access to equipment and expertise in biomaterials, cellular engineering, biochemistry, optical/electronic instrumentation, and computer science. As part of our team, you will: • Develop and implement state-of-the-art biomonitoring approaches for augmented wound healing in animal models • Work at the cross-section of biomaterials, soft biosensors, optical systems, and image processing • Collaborate with a wide array of internal (within Duke University) as well as reputed external industrial partners • Publish research findings in high-impact academic journals and conferences Your Skills & Experience: We seek a candidate willing to contribute with creative, out-of-the-box solutions to problems arising in a dynamic environment.

1) Expected degree: • Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, biochemistry, biology, optics, or related field 2) The ideal candidate will have the following: • Expertise in conducting animal studies (from experimental design to implementation & data analysis) • Expertise in biomedical optics (such as optical coherence tomography [OCT] and/or non-linear optical systems) 3) Experience in one or more of the following is a major plus: • Designing or developing biosensors • Using biomaterials for in vivo studies • Biomolecular engineering to target specific biomarkers • Bioconjugation techniques • Wound healing or tissue engineering
