Position Statement for Duke Engineering Cluster Hire

The Duke University Pratt School of Engineering is seeking applicants for multiple tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty positions in the targeted area of Computational and Robotic Systems for Surgery.  Early career researchers doing innovative work in the clinical application of computational tools and engineering approaches to surgery and medicine are encouraged to apply.  Areas of interest include real-time imaging, virtual/augmented reality, medical robotics, haptics, and/or ubiquitous sensors, potentially all linked and driven by AI-enabled algorithms, as well as modeling and simulation explicitly applied to assisting clinical practice.  This search represents a collaborative integration of interests from the Biomedical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering & Material Science Departments.  As such, appointments may be with a single department or multiple departments, depending on the circumstances of each individual.  Successful applicants will also be expected to develop collaborative relationships with clinical faculty at the Duke University School of Medicine.  All applicants with the skills and research interests that fall within the scope of this search will be given full consideration.

Information on the cutting edge, multidisciplinary research and teaching of the Pratt School of Engineering can be found at https://pratt.duke.edu/.  We consistently rank among the top undergraduate and graduate engineering programs in country.  In addition, the Duke Engineering and Medicine campuses are directly connected with each other.  As such, we are a driving force in creating engineering knowledge, computational tools, and novel biomedical technology that improve the human condition through the advancement of clinical care and biomedical science.  This occurs via close collaboration with medical professionals to identify important clinical problems that impact human health and solve them using our technical expertise.  We engage motivated and talented students in the classroom, laboratory and clinic, imparting to them the spirit of our mission as we prepare them for future careers as effective, knowledgeable, and ethical leaders in corporate, professional, and academic communities.

Duke University and the Pratt School of Engineering are strongly committed to advancing inclusive excellence throughout our research, teaching, and service activities.  A diverse faculty – defined broadly as representing a wide range of identities, lived experiences, and perspectives – is a prerequisite for excellence and is essential to driving innovation within our scholarly community.  To achieve these goals, it is essential that all members of the community feel valued and welcome, that the contributions of all individuals are respected, and that all voices are heard.  All members of our community are expected to uphold these values, and we seek to hire faculty who are passionate about increasing the participation and success of individuals from all different backgrounds and communities.

Interested candidates should submit the following by November 15th, 2023:

• cover letter (with contact information);

• curriculum vitae;

• research statement (no more than 3 pages) that includes a description of past research accomplishments, plans for future research, and experience and approach to mentoring and supporting a diverse and inclusive research environment;

• teaching statement (no more than 3 pages) describing teaching philosophy, previous experiences, future plans for teaching, and experience and approach to fostering an inclusive learning and mentoring environment for students; and

• list of three references who will provide letters on behalf of the candidate.

Applicants should have an earned doctorate in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field.
