Lab manager position for Venturelli and Romero labs

Research Associate(Lab Manager) position is available starting August 1, 2024 in the Venturelli and Romero labs at Duke University. The Venturelli Lab aims to understand how interactions across genetic, molecular and ecological scales combine to generate microbial community behaviors. We seek to understand and engineer the spatiotemporal behaviors of biological networks using tools from systems and synthetic biology. A major goal is to design novel strategies to precisely shift microbiomes to desired metabolic states. The Venturelli Lab research combines multiplexed measurements of single cells, populations and ecosystems with concepts from nonlinear dynamical systems, control theory, multi-objective optimization and machine learning. The Romero lab studies the design principles of proteins and how they can be applied to engineer new molecular functions. The Romero lab leverages techniques from DNA sequencing, synthesis, molecular modeling, machine learning and optimization.

The lab manager position role in the Venturelli Lab will involve maintenance of the Venturelli Lab bacterial collections, maintenance and further development of high-throughput bacterial community culturing pipeline, programming and operating liquid handling robots, development and maintenance of liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry protocols and instrument, research tasks to support major projects in the lab. In addition, the lab manager will set up and maintain biosafety, chemical safety protocols and lab ordering. In the Romero lab, the lab manager will oversee lab ordering, chemical and biological safety, organizing chemicals and assistance in major research projects.

Qualifications include a PhD in chemistry, biology or engineering. The idea candidate will have experience microbiology techniques, molecular biology, experience in working with liquid handling robots and metabolomics. Interested candidates should send their CV, description of research goals and names of reference writers to Dr. Ophelia Venturelli (Ophelia.venturelli@gmail.com) and Dr. Philip Romero (romero.philip@gmail.com).
