The Pomona College Department of Music invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in music history, beginning July 1, 2022, at the rank of Assistant Professor. Priority will be given to applicants having a significant musicological research trajectory and/or performance experience with music prior to 1750; secondary areas of fluency with music after 1750 are desirable.

We seek a scholar-musician who shares and models the department’s philosophy that scholarship and music-making are equally valued parts of a liberal-arts college music curriculum. We further seek a colleague who can employ current insights from musicology to attract non-majors and stimulate a robust interest in music scholarship among Pomona’s remarkably diverse and inquisitive student body.

The four-course annual teaching load will include upper-level seminars in music history as well as introductory courses in music literature. Such courses should reflect an inclusive vision of the field and critically engage with pertinent topics across disciplines in the humanities, arts, natural and physical sciences, and social sciences. Teaching as part of the College’s first-year writing seminar (ID-1) is expected; other course offerings may be requested based on the candidate’s expertise and departmental needs. The position also includes advising of undergraduate student research and senior projects.

The successful candidate will have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to improving higher education for underrepresented students. A completed Ph.D. in music history or historical musicology is expected by July 2022.

Pomona College is committed to excellence through diversity and encourages applications from members of underrepresented groups.

Please upload copies of all materials no later than October 15, 2021: 1) a letter of application, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) a statement regarding your approach to teaching music in a liberal-arts setting, 4) a statement of plans for research, 5) a statement addressing your demonstrated ability to mentor a diverse student body, 6) three letters of recommendation, and 7) graduate transcripts.

Review of applications will begin on October 16, 2021; all applications received by that date will receive full consideration.
