The Materials Science and Engineering Department within the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering & Applied Science at Lehigh University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position as an Assistant Professor to begin August of 2023. Areas of interest include physical/mechanical metallurgy with expertise in electron microscopy and modeling/simulation. 

The successful candidate in metallurgy/electron microscopy will have a strong background in phase transformations, microstructural evolution, and structure-property relations of metallic systems, and is expected to have expertise in electron microscopy and become an extensive user of Lehigh’s electron microscopy facilities. Lehigh maintains one of the most comprehensive electron microscopy facilities in the U.S., with a suite of nine scanning, transmission and scanning/transmission instruments. The facility also houses the world's highest resolution analytical electron microscope that is custom designed for nanoscale analysis and atomic resolution imaging. The successful candidate in modeling and simulation position will be a computational materials scientist/theorist whose research will complement existing departmental expertise. The areas of specific interest include, but are not limited to, the following: first-principles calculations of materials structure and properties, atomistic computer simulation of metallic, ceramic, polymeric, and/or electronic materials, mesoscale simulation of grain growth or defect dynamics and the application of materials informatics (AI applied to machine learning) to the discovery and development of novel materials. It is expected that the successful candidate will have a strong background in, for example, computational chemistry or materials physics and be eager to work with both theorists and experimentalists in allied departments. 

 Highly qualified candidates in other research areas may also be considered. Applicants are required to have a doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering or a directly related field by the date of hire, and the ability and interest to teach core MS&E courses. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong research program, contribute to our educational mission, complement our existing strengths, and collaborate effectively with colleagues.  Lehigh’s MS&E Department (https://engineering.lehigh.edu/matsci) maintains active research in the areas of ceramics, glasses, polymers, electronic materials, biomaterials, metals, modeling/simulation, and electron microscopy. The MS&E faculty includes fellows of professional societies and many NSF CAREER award winners. Opportunities also exist to collaborate with researchers from other departments within and outside the engineering college along with the three Interdisciplinary Research Institutes; namely the Institutes for Functional Materials and Devices, for Cyber Physical Infrastructure, and for Data, Intelligent Systems and Computation.
