Brandeis University invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral Fellowship funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to participate in the John E. Sawyer Seminar, “Imperiled Bodies: Slavery, Colonialism, Citizenship, and the Logics of Gender-Based Violence.” The Fellow will be housed in the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and affiliated with the Women’s Studies Research Center. We seek scholars whose research focuses on gender-based violence and its intersection with heteropatriarchy, slavery, colonialism, imperialism, racism, capitalism, and other oppressive structures and regimes. The seminar will explore the logics and mechanisms by which violence becomes embedded in the ordinary and quotidian as well as ruptures and acts of resistance that transform the law, the social imaginary, social institutions, and everyday life. Given the seminar’s interdisciplinary and comparative framework, we welcome applicants from any discipline whose research intersects with the concerns of the seminar. The Fellow is required to be in residence for the 2023-2024 academic year and be an active participant in all aspects of the seminar. Primary responsibilities will be to conduct original research on a topic related to gender-based violence; attend and participate in the seminar meetings and other activities; consult regularly with the Principal Investigators (Anita Hill and Harleen Singh) and seminar organizers; engage with seminar participants and host visiting scholars; and write content for the project website, blog, and social media.

The Fellowship carries a nine-month appointment beginning August 2024 and a stipend of $60,000 plus benefits. To apply, candidates must have completed all requirements for their doctoral degree by July 1, 2023. First consideration will be given to applications received by March 1, 2023.
