The Interdisciplinary Quantum Science for Fundamental Physics Initiative (the IQ Initiative), within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a senior postdoctoral research fellow position (the IQ Fellowship) in theoretical physics. Candidates with expertise at the interface of quantum science and fundamental physics, broadly defined, are especially encouraged to apply. Specific topics of interest include (i) emergent analogues of fundamental particles in quantum simulation platforms, (ii) probes of phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics through precision many-body measurements with novel condensed matter materials or ultracold atomic, molecular, and photonic gases, (iii) modeling and experimentation to detect dark matter using engineered table-top quantum systems (iv) quantum field theoretic concepts that can be tested by and drive the design of next-generation quantum materials and technologies (v) advanced solid-state materials and devices (in the form of new detectors) that can be exploited in particle physics experiments for improved time resolution and lower energy detection thresholds. The appointment will initially be for two years with the expectation of extension to a third year contingent upon performance. Generous salary and research funds will be provided to IQ Fellows. The IQ Initiative aims to become the center for scientific inquiry, training, and exchange in fundamental quantum physics. The IQ fellow will have the opportunity to organize seminars and focused topical workshops. Successful candidates must have a PhD degree in Physics or a closely related field and outstanding research credentials. Interested candidates should upload a cover letter, CV, research statement, publication list, and have 3 reference letters sent to Academic Jobs Online by 26 August, 2022 for full consideration. Inquiries are welcome to be directed to Professor Brian Batell (batell@pitt.edu, search chair) or any other committee members (W. Vincent Liu, wvliu@pitt.edu; Vittorio Paolone, vipres@pitt.edu; Hrvoje Petek, petek@pitt.edu) whomever you feel close to the areas of your experience. The University of Pittsburgh and the Department of Physics and Astronomy are strongly committed to fostering equity, inclusion, and diversity at all levels. The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
