Chapman University’s Schmid College of Science and Technology seeks applications for a part-time physics lecturer who has the ability to teach one or two sections of an introductory physics sequence for undergraduate students, beginning Spring 2019. This sequence of General Physics for the Life Sciences is taken primarily by life science majors in the fields of biology, kinesiology, health science, and pre-pharmacy, with occasional students from other fields of science like mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry, and computer science.

For each assigned course section, the lecturer will teach a 75 minute class two times per week or 50 minute class three times per week throughout the semester depending on availability. There are two courses available, of which a successful candidate may request one or both, pending remaining availability: (i) Introductory Mechanics (PHYS107), and (ii) Introductory Electromagnetism (PHYS108). The lecturer will coordinate with an experienced instructor to base the assigned course section off existing course skeletons, with consultation and mentorship.  Responsibilities each week include preparing lectures that emphasize example problems, coordinating class material with the other section instructors and the laboratory instructors, holding office hours, and grading assignments submitted by the students. The lecturer must be available to attend general physics instructor meetings periodically through the semester, as well as a half day orientation at the beginning of the semester.


A Ph.D. or M.S. degree in physics or related area is required.

University or community college teaching experience, specifically with general physics courses.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.

Strong commitment to student learning, quality teaching and academic excellence.

Ability to motivate and teach students of diverse learning styles and backgrounds.
