Part-Time General Chemistry Lab Lecturers, Fall 2019

General Information: Chapman University’s Schmid College of Science and Technology seeks applications for part-time general chemistry lab lecturers who have the ability to teach undergraduate students, beginning August 2019. General chemistry labs are taken by science majors in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, biology, kinesiology, health science, and pre-pharmacy.

Chapman University, located in the heart of Orange County, offers traditional undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences and select pre-professional and graduate programs. Responsibilities: Lecturers will teach an assigned 4 hour lab section once per week throughout the semester. Responsibilities each week include preparing a quiz, presenting a 30-45 minute pre-laboratory lecture about the lab material, instructing and guiding students in correct laboratory technique and safety during the execution of an inquiry-based laboratory experiment, hold office hours, and grade all assignments submitted by the students. The possible general chemistry laboratory section times are weekdays 8:00-11:50 AM, 1:00-4:50 PM or 6:00-9:50 PM, depending on availability. The lecturer must be available to attend a once per week general chemistry instructor meeting and a half day orientation at the beginning of the semester.

Qualifications: • A Ph.D. or M.S. degree in chemistry or related area • University or community college teaching experience, specifically with general chemistry courses. • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing. • Knowledge of computer assisted learning strategies in chemistry. • Demonstrated commitment to student learning, quality teaching and academic excellence. • Proven ability to motivate and teach students of diverse learning styles and backgrounds. • Appreciation and respect for student role, contribution, and responsibility in the learning process. • Commitment to personalized education.
