The Head of Collections Strategy provides leadership, vision and strategic direction for the Duke University Libraries in the development, preservation and management of the Libraries’ general collections, ensuring an appropriate scope and caliber of the resources which the libraries collect and provide access to in support of the mission of Duke University. As such, this position is responsible for significant aspects of Duke’s collections budget, which includes the allocation, management, and analysis of Duke’s financial resources. It is also deeply involved in negotiating and managing some of Duke’s largest and most complex deals with publishers and other vendors. This position works especially closely with subject librarians and members of Duke’s technical services, helping both to guide collections work in those areas as well as to support the collections work of those individuals. It is also part of Duke’s Research, Collections and Scholarly Communications Leadership Team, which includes Duke’s core research and teaching support departments.

o   Collections

  • Provides engaged and coordinated leadership in efforts to develop Duke collections and collection access through support of initiatives that support a more effective, equitable and open scholarly information ecosystem.
  • Plays a leading role in allocating and managing the Libraries’ collections budgets, university allocated and endowment, currently totaling approximately $18M, in close collaboration with Duke Technical Services and Business Services.
  • Analyzes and reports on data and trends regarding collection growth, usage, material costs, expenditures, etc. to inform decisions regarding the Libraries’ collections budget and to develop collection management and development strategies.
  • Engages and actively communicates with subject librarians to encourage a holistic approach to collection building in the context of outreach, access, and research support.
  • Participates in the recruitment, retention, training, and evaluation of subject librarians in conjunction with their direct supervisors.
  • Works closely with department and section heads across a number of library departments to allocate resources and assure coordination of policies and operations related to collections.
  • Participates in the Libraries’ advancement, fundraising, and stewardship efforts as they relate to collection development. 

o    Promotes and explores new models of publishing and collaboration in collection development at local, national and global levels and works to make strategic use of our collaborations and partnerships, such as Ivy Plus, TRLN, ASERL, NERL, CRL, and HathiTrust, to enhance access to resources, make more effective use of collections budget, and support new models of library engagement. Encourages open and equitable access to information and supports other desired changes in scholarly communication marketplace: 

o   Collection Strategy and Development Department

  • Hires, supervises and evaluates staff; prepares and manages the departmental budget; oversees the department’s web page(s).
  • Manages structural oversight of the Libraries’ approval plans with input from the subject librarians and in collaboration with staff of the Technical Services Acquisitions Departments.
  • Working with subject librarians and other staff members, assesses adequacy of library collections and services in conjunction with external reviews of academic programs and proposals of new programs, majors, minors, and certificates.
  • Ensures efficient and effective materials management within the Department related to gifts-in-kind, conservation, Scribe digitization and replacements.

o   Actively contributes to library-wide initiatives; participates in departmental and library-wide activities; serves on library and University committees. 

o   Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuous development of professional knowledge and abilities through membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity.

o   Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

·       Supervises Collection Development Department staff (2.75 FTE) comprised of the Materials Management Assistant, Collections Coordinator and the Collection Development Specialist.

Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the conceptual, analytical, and interpersonal skills required to manage and lead a critical library program. 



·        Three years of progressively responsible professional experience related to collection development in an academic or research library; 

·        Creativity, initiative, and interest in innovative approaches to collection development; 

·        Commitment to proactively promoting and embracing diversity, equity, and inclusive collection development programs and ideas contributing to an antiracist learning, teaching, and research environment

·        Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively, including engaging presentation skills and the ability to connect dynamically with an audience. Able to represent organizational concerns to internal and external parties.

·        Successful experience shaping, analyzing and explaining complex budgets, including using the budgeting process to balance long-term and short-term objectives;

·        Demonstrated ability to collaborate across a range of diverse constituents and stakeholders. Experience in initiating, leading, and actively participating in successful partnerships and collaborative activities. 

·        Experience with managing organizational change;

·        A deep understanding of the academic publishing landscape, including new developments related to open access publishing, and transformative publishing agreements;


·        Two or more years of successful managerial and supervisory experience; 

·        Experience in the evaluation, selection, licensing and acquisition of library content in all formats; 

·        Data analysis and visualization experience, particularly with regards to collections;

·        Proficiency using enterprise library automation systems;

Working Conditions

·       Occasionally works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible

·       Normal office environment

·       Occasional travel required

Salary and Benefits

Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; however, the anticipated range is $78,500-$95,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
