The Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development (Duke Aging Center) in Duke University’s School of Medicine is currently recruiting for a Director position for the Aging Center Data Science & Statistics (DSS) Lab. This position will include a faculty appointment in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics and the position will be jointly reviewed by both the Center on Aging and the B&B department.

The DSS Lab is a small group of faculty, data scientists, biostatisticians, and data managers who work collaboratively on a range of projects on all aspects of aging including proposals, funded grants, clinical trials, pilot and program projects. The studies are interdisciplinary and range from the population to the molecular level.

Occupational Summary

This position is expected to lead and manage the DSS team - providing consultation, project direction, allocation of effort by staff, training of both faculty and junior statisticians and setting timelines to ensure staff are able to meet the analysis, data management and statistical needs of each project. Work will involve effort on several ongoing projects simultaneously, each at various stage of completion, both working in a team and, at times, alone. Emphasis is placed on the ability to work collaboratively with researchers and effectively lead team members, requiring a broad range of biostatistical skills and areas of research in aging.

Work Performed:

Potential areas of research emphasis include health equity, data standardization, data harmonization, clinical trials design, causal inference, use of Electronic Health Record (EHR) data into analyses, and assistance with junior faculty on pilot projects.  Future focus for the Aging Center likely will include machine learning, causal discovery/inference from electronic health records and observational clinical data, socioeconomic determinants of health, medical image data, mobile health data, and/or analysis of microbiome, genetic analysis, and -omics data.

Roles.

1. DSS Director: direct activities and support for all DSS faculty/staff on new and ongoing projects; to set SAPs, timelines and provide project leadership; perform administrative tasks that include budget development/oversight, performance review and career development for direct reports and active participation in the Aging Center leadership team. Integrate new statistical techniques and personnel into center projects as necessary. Additionally, the DSS Director will advise, consult, teach techniques for projects on an as needed basis. Identify opportunities to expand the DSS Lab’s capabilities and communicate resource needs and promote new areas of research as part of Aging Center leadership team.

2. Aging Center Leadership: oversee data integrity and management practices and infrastructure for the Aging Center and its affiliated research programs; maintain and update research quality and management plans to support best practices for privacy, security, and integrity. Oversee the Aging Center’s “inventory” of data resources.

3. Consultative Statistical Services: meet with Aging Center faculty to assist in their self-initiated analyses, or analysis of data in preparation to grant or paper submission; match Aging Center researchers with appropriate DSS staff to mentor and assist in pilot studies. Lead the preparation of statistical components of new grants by preparing the Data Management, propose Methods and Analysis of Specific Aims, & Power Analysis sections (grants range from industry sponsored, internal, K-awards, RO1s, to Program Project grants).

4. Core Leadership: The Aging Center has several large Center Grants and Programs (CALERIE, PEPPER, ADRC).  The Director is expected to lead the Analysis Core and support research for the projects within the Centers.

5. Faculty Involvement in Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Dept: The B&B department is growing and welcomes faculty to provide support, assist in faculty development, teach, join leadership. Teaching and other activities in the department is encouraged but not required.

6. Self-initiated research: – Aging Center leadership is supportive of self-initiated research – including grant applications, preparations for publications (both biostatistical and clinical) and presentations at scientific meetings and training in methods. Protected time for self-initiated funded research is supported.
