Occupational Summary

Lead bioinformatics analysis for several large and complex research projects in genetics and genomics. Work with investigators to provide solutions to bioinformatics questions, design and develop solutions to meet those needs, and develop new computational and statistical methods when needed. Also provide input for short-term and long-term strategic planning to take advantage of the newly developed methods and applications in the analysis of high-throughput genetics and genomics studies. Effectively collaborate and communicate across interdisciplinary teams of faculty, staff, fellows, and students. Provide mentorship and guidance to trainees.

Work Performed

Lead collaborative bioinformatic analyses for complex high-throughput genomic datasets. Independently work with researchers to understand details of the project design, the data types being generated, and what are the prioritized hypotheses that are being asked. Manage effort to appropriately prioritize the most urgent needs, while maintaining appropriate effort and progress towards long-term goals. (40%).

Upon completion of experiments and analyses, actively participate and collaborate in preparation of scientific publications based on the results and presentations of findings at local, national, and international meetings. Interface with other engineers, biologists, statisticians and computational biologists at Duke University. (15%)

Collaborate with researchers individually or in small groups to identify new hypotheses that can be learned from datasets, recommend bioinformatic analysis solutions, perform those analyses, and provide updates and results. (15%).

Develop novel computational and statistical methods, strategies and improvements for genomic datasets (e.g. CRISPR screens) and evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies to generate novel biological insights. Success in this area, along with publication of developments, would be a pathway toward advancement in this role. (15%)

Assist with oversight of data management and interface with Data Coordinating Center (DCC) of the relevant NIH Consortia (e.g. IGVF Consortium). (10%)

Provide training on bioinformatics-related concepts, applications and tools to researchers across the CAGT. Design and participate in hands-on workshops to teach scientists how to use common analysis workflows. (5%)

Education/Training

Ph.D. degree in a Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Science or related field. Programming skills in one or more scripting languages commonly used in scientific computing, most preferably Python. Extensive experience working and programming in a Unix environment.

Experience

Five or more years of work experience in bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput genomic data. Includes one year of supervisory experience, and experience implementing reproducible bioinformatics pipelines and related statistical analysis, aiding in the quality control and interpretation of genomics data analyses, and experience with best practices for organizing, replicating, and backing up high-throughput genomics data.

Skills

Demonstrated ability to work independently. Familiarity with analyzing a variety of diverse genomic datasets, and applicable pipelines. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a diversity of technical and non-technical collaborators. Ability to prioritize multiple projects to maximize utility of datasets and biological insights.
