The Simons Collaboration on Ultra-Quantum Matter anticipates appointing up to seven Postdoctoral Fellows across the following locations:  

California Institute of Technology (Xie Chen) 
Harvard University (Subir Sachdev and Ashvin Vishwanath) 
Stanford University (Shamit Kachru) 
University of California San Diego (John McGreevy) 
University of Colorado Boulder (Victor Gurarie and Michael Hermele) 
University of Maryland and Joint Quantum Institute (Victor Galitski) 
University of Texas Austin (Andreas Karch)

 Ultra-Quantum Matter (UQM) describes macroscopic quantum systems possessing robust nonlocal quantum entanglement, including topological and fracton quantum matter as well as strongly interacting gapless phases such as non-Fermi liquids. The goal of Collaboration is to fully develop the theory of UQM utilizing a variety of approaches including quantum field theory, as well as work towards the realization and testing of UQM in the lab, particularly in synthetic quantum systems. To achieve this, the collaboration brings together experts in condensed matter physics, high energy physics, quantum information and atomic physics. The ramifications range from the discovery of new phases of matter to revolutionary quantum technologies to tabletop models for elementary particles and potentially even quantum gravity.  

Fellows will benefit from the strong activities in a range of fields found at collaborating institutions, and the regular schedule of collaboration meetings. They will also have the opportunity to pursue their own research programs in related areas. More information about the Collaboration and its research goals can be found on the Collaboration’s website. 

Applications, to be made through Academic Jobs Online, should consist of a cover letter, a CV, list of publications, summary of research interests, and three letters of recommendation. Applicants must have received the Ph.D. degree prior to beginning the appointment. The cover letter should explain how the Fellow will contribute to the goals of the Collaboration as stated above. Fellows will typically be based at a single principal institution, but extended visits to other UQM sites will be encouraged and supported. Applicants are encouraged to indicate their preferred UQM institutions in the cover letter. For full consideration, applications should be received by November 15, 2019 however applications will be accepted after that date.
