Position Description: |
Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, invites applications for postdoctoral positions in theoretical condensed matter physics in conjunction with the ERC Synergy project HERO on Hidden, Entangled and Resonating Orders. Project descriptionWe expect to have openings for two postdoctoral positions in theoretical condensed matter physics: Position 1: Dynamic Quantum MatterOne position will have the focus on Dynamic Quantum Matter. Quantum materials have stimulated a host of new ideas based on unconventional correlated, entangled, hidden and topological orders. Correlations, entanglement, novel dynamic orders determine the properties of quantum materials and naturally reveal themselves in the time domain. We seek a qualified PD in this area with particular focus on dynamic superconducting states, odd-frequency superconductivity, dynamic multiferroicity and Dirac materials. Position 2: Machine Learning and Data InformaticsThe second position will be in machine learning and data informatics. Recent growth of computational power and high demand for prediction of materials with target properties have led to a new way of doing materials research referred to as materials informatics. This approach places the main effort on performing high-throughput computing combined with data mining. Applications of this data-driven approach are wide-ranging and cover the search for various quantum materials with special electrical, optical and magnetic properties. The successful candidate(s) is expected to bridge the analytic and ab initio calculations in the framework of density functional theory within the field of quantum materials, including van der Waals and Dirac materials, topological materials, superconductivity, photovoltaics and multiferroics. The project is closely tied to the development of the open-access organic materials database OMDB (omdb.diracmaterials.org) which is being built up at Nordita. Main responsibilitiesThe positions include conducting a strong research and interacting with colleagues and visitors at Nordita, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University and elsewhere in the Nordic countries. Successful candidates are expected to spend significant time at KTH, SU and Nordita building connections between condensed matter groups. Qualification requirementsPostdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country. Assessment criteriaThe degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar. In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills and ability to conduct research in the interactive interdisciplinry environment. Terms of employmentThe position involves full-time employment for one year with the possibility of extension for one or two years depending on circumstances. Start date is 14 February 2020 or as per agreement. Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all. ApplicationThe deadline for applications is 15 December, 2019. Only online applications will be accepted. Applications should include a CV and publication list, a statement of research interests and three letters of reference. ContactFurther information about the position can be obtained from Professor Alexander V. Balatsky, Nordita, avb@nordita.org Nordita was founded in 1957 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and was relocated to the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm in January 2007 where it is jointly hosted by Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Research at Nordita covers a wide range of modern theoretical physics including astrophysics, biological physics, condensed matter physics, gravitation, cosmology and astroparticle physics, high-energy physics, and statistical physics/complex systems. The research activity of the local academic staff is supplemented by Nordita Scientific Programs, which bring together groups of leading experts to work on specific topics for extended periods. There is also ample opportunity for collaboration with faculty and research staff at local universities. Further information about Nordita can be found at www.nordita.org. |
