Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship stipend associated to the research program funded by Swedish Research Council Starting Grant "Understanding the emergence of large scale coherence in turbulent flows" of Nordita Assistant Professor Dr. Cristobal Arratia.

Project description

The research program is focused on developing theoretical models to explain the organization of turbulent flows at large scales in situations involving the breaking of a continuous symmetry. The position involves analytical and numerical work on the formulation and implementation of these models. Particular physical situations to be described comprise gravity wave excitation in free surface flow and pattern formation in wall bounded shear flow. Relevant theoretical approaches involved in this project include stability analysis, multiscale expansions, bifurcation theory, amplitude equations, Reynolds decomposition, quasilinear approximations and stochastic modelling.

The position will involve active participation in the soft matter group at Nordita and possibilities for local and external collaboration.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The successful candidate should hold a PhD in tphysics, applied mathematics, mechanical engineering or a related field, with an adequate expertise in fluid dynamics and proficiency with computational methods. The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to a research record in hydrodynamic instabilities

Since female scientists are underrepresented at Nordita we especially encourage women to apply. Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for two years, starting in spring 2021 or some other date to be agreed upon.

The deadline for applications is 30 November, 2020. Only online applications will be accepted. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a statement of research interests including future research plans. Additionally, candidates must arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted.

Further information about the position can be obtained from Assistant Professor Dr. Cristobal Arratia, Nordita,

Nordita was founded in 1957 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and was relocated to the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm in January 2007 where it is jointly hosted by Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Research at Nordita covers a wide range of modern theoretical physics including astrophysics, biological physics, condensed matter physics, gravitation, cosmology and astroparticle physics, high-energy physics, and statistical physics/complex systems. The research activity of the local academic staff is supplemented by Nordita Scientific Programs, which bring together groups of leading experts to work on specific topics for extended periods. There is also ample opportunity for collaboration with faculty and research staff at local universities.
