Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, together with the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI)/Wilczek Quantum Center (WQC) in Shanghai, invites applications for a post-doctoral fellowship in theoretical physics.

The appointment is for two plus one (3 total) years starting 1st January, 2023 or some other date to be agreed upon. The candidate will spend the first two years at either at TDL/WQC or Nordita and the third year at the reciprocal institution.

The fellowship is intended for scientists who are within four years of receiving their Ph.D. and wish to carry out research in theoretical physics represented at TDLI/WQC and Nordita. Minorities are encouraged to apply. At present these research fields cover

  • unconventional superconductivity, superfluidity, and topological materials
  • quantum magnetism, quantum phase transitions
  • quantum open systems, dynamics of quantum matter
  • integrable models
  • ultra-cold gases and quantum optics
  • Machine learning, quantum computing, and quantum information theory
  • fundamental interactions and its applications to astronomy and cosmology
  • application of quantum mechanics to biological processes.

The deadline for applications is Nov 30, 2022.

Nordita was founded in 1957 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and was relocated to the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm in January 2007 where it is jointly hosted by Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Research at Nordita covers a wide range of modern theoretical physics including astrophysics, biological physics, condensed matter physics, gravitation, cosmology and astroparticle physics, high-energy physics, quantum information, and statistical physics/complex systems. The research activity of the local academic staff is supplemented by Nordita Scientific Programs, which brings together groups of leading experts to work on specific topics for extended periods. There is also ample opportunity for collaboration with faculty and research staff at local universities.

The TDLI was founded in 2016 in Shanghai, China. It is jointly established by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Municipal Government of Shanghai, and jointly funded by National Science Foundation of China. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is retained and approved by the government to operate the new Institute as its contractor and trustee. The TDLI aims to boost researches in basic sciences and interdisciplinary fields via undertaking three basic missions: 1) provides a platform to foster academic training, exchange, and collaborations for worldwide physicists; 2) hosts cuttingedge research programs on most fundamental questions in particle physics, cosmology and quantum physics with potential expansion to include other related areas such as the application of quantum mechanics to bioprocesses; 3) actively engages in general public science education.

The Wilczek Quantum Center, WQC, was founded in 2014, Hangzhou, China. It was moved to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2017 in conjunction with the exciting development of TDLI for which Prof. Wilczek was appointed Founding Director. The general purpose of the WQC is to advance the level of fundamental research in Shanghai and to promote scientific exchange and collaboration with the World. The WQC directs its main efforts to theoretical research in the areas of ultra-cold gases, quantum optics, quantum information theory, the theory of fundamental interactions and its applications to astronomy and cosmology, the application of quantum mechanics to biological processes. Our goal is to develop the Center into an institute recognized worldwide, working at the cutting edge of quantum research frontiers.
