We Are

Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

We are strategic risk takers, innovators and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are 1,800 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a highly qualified candidate for a postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Accelerator Division’s IOTA/FAST Department to work on the physics and technology of electron lenses for nonlinear integrable lattices, electron cooling, and space-charge compensation in the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA). The main purpose of the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility is research in beam physics for the next generation of particle accelerators. A key part of the program is the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator, which is dedicated to the experimental study of nonlinear integrable dynamics, optical stochastic cooling, space-charge-dominated beams, the quantum behavior of electrons in storage rings, and other advanced concepts. IOTA will be completed and commissioned in 2018. It is an accurate and flexible machine, designed to operate with 150-MeV electrons from the existing FAST superconducting linac or with 2.5-MeV protons from a new injector.

The position is for an initial period of up to three (3) years, with the potential for extension considered on a yearly basis thereafter.

You Will

• Develop models and perform numerical simulations of beam dynamics.

• Design, build, install and commission accelerator apparatus.

• Organize and conduct beam studies.

• Acquire data and perform statistical data analyses.

• Give oral presentations at scientific meetings and conferences.

• Write research reports and journal articles.

• Respect, understand and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity.

• Abide by all environment, safety and health regulations.

We Are Looking For

• Ph.D. or equivalent in Accelerator Physics or a related discipline by the time of the appointment.

• Strong record of recent accomplishments in experimental physics.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, as demonstrated by presentations, journal articles, and research reports.

• Familiarity with beam-dynamics simulation codes, mechanical design, vacuum technology, electronics, and data-acquisition systems is preferred. Physical Activity and Work Conditions

Human factors: mental concentration, sitting, standing, visually demanding.

Physical factors: confined spaces, ionizing radiation, oxygen-deficiency hazard, high voltage. Ability to work underground and climb stairs.
