The Target Systems Department of the Acceleration Division is seeking candidates for a Scientist to provide scientific leadership for the Mu2e Target Station. The successful candidate will be involved with studies of muon beam generation, development of beam components and the associated equipment, experimental test of prototype devices, and operation of the target station.

The Target System Department consists of physicists, engineers, and technicians involved with the design, construction, operation, maintenance, upgrades of all the high-powered target facilities at Fermilab: Mu2e, NuMI, LBNF, Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN), and Muon g-2. These facilities include targets, focusing elements, beam windows, collimators/baffles, decay pipes, beam absorbers, and remote handling equipment needed for maintenance and replacement of components.

You Will • Work with scientists and engineers in the implementation, operation, and upgrades of the Mu2e target station at Fermilab. • Provide leadership for development and operations of the Mu2e target station. • Coordinate effort to model and simulate particle interactions that occur within the target station. • Develop instrumentation and methods to monitor target station performance. • Participate in other research, operations, and projects of relevance within the Accelerator Division and the Target Systems Department. • Participate in the high-powered targetry research and development. • Present results and updates to the Target Systems Department, the Accelerator Division, Mu2e collaboration, and/or at conferences. • Contribute effectively within a diverse workforce and upholds Fermilab’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

We Are Looking For • Ph.D. in accelerator physics, particle physics, or relevant discipline. • At least ten (10) years of scientific research experience (or equivalent) in accelerator physics, particle physics, or relevant discipline. • Experience with the properties of fundamental particles and their interactions with materials. • Experience performing simulations and comparisons with data. Knowledge of modern Monte Carlo codes for high-energy particle productions is desirable. Knowledge of data management techniques and tools is desirable. • Experience in practices of radiation protection and hazard evaluation is desirable. • Experience with particle physics detectors or accelerator beam instrumentation is desirable. • Experience with accelerator physics and techniques is desirable. • Experience proposing and executing small experiments is desirable. • Ability to make competitive proposals, secure funding, and manage the finances of small projects is desirable. • Ability to effectively troubleshoot technical systems is desirable. • Ability to work effectively under the requirements of schedules and shifting priorities. • Ability to work effectively with other individuals and within groups of varying composition. • Experience managing small groups is desirable. • A record of scientific accomplishments, publications, and other products of research. • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including the preparation and delivery of papers, reports, and presentations.
