The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) has an opening for a Deputy Director for the NASA 3.2-meter Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF); full-time, federally funded, non-tenure-track, annually renewable subject to availability of funds, to begin as soon as possible after May 01, 2023, by mutual agreement. The position will be based at the IfA facility in Hilo on the Island of Hawai‘i. Duties: The incumbent will work closely with the IRTF Director to ensure optimum performance of the telescope and instruments and take the lead in some areas of observatory operations. These include managing the telescope time allocation committee and telescope scheduling, supervising telescope operators and night assistants, providing regular real-time support and troubleshooting for observers, and helping the Director with strategic planning. As University of Hawai‘i (UH) faculty the incumbent will be able to supervise graduate students funded by IRTF, and apply for UH time on Maunakea telescopes. About 25% of the time will be available for independent personal research.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics or related field, four years of experience at the Associate level. Research experience involving the use, operation, support, or development of astronomical telescopes and instrumentation are required. Ability to work in a team environment and communicate well with users. Ability to work at 4,200-meter altitude on Maunakea.

Desirable Qualifications: experience in managing or directing a technical group; expertise in planetary astronomy; hands-on experience with optical and infrared astronomical instrumentation using array detectors. Salary to commensurate with experience.
