Department: Theatre, Film, and Media Arts Position: Lighting Design Rank: Assistant Professor

Description:

The Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts at The Ohio State University invites applications from emerging or accomplished lighting designers and educators in the field of live performance for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 15, 2023.

This colleague will join a department that includes designers, directors, filmmakers, critics, theorists, historians, performers, technicians and makers of new work. A willingness to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries is encouraged, both within our department and beyond. This teaching artist will contribute to vibrant undergraduate programs and restart our successful MFA program in lighting, currently on hold.

Among more than a dozen faculty in the department, their colleagues will include three design faculty and six production staff members, including a Lighting Studio Manager, all of whom teach in our programs. This new colleague will help inaugurate an all-new facility housing performance venues, production studios, offices and classrooms, scheduled to open in the fall of 2023. This facility, the newest addition to Ohio State’s Arts District, will help connect our teaching and practice to other departments and centers including Art, Dance, Music, The Wexner Center for the Arts, and The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design.

Duties include instruction of undergraduate and graduate courses from introductory to advanced levels; mentoring and advising of students; curriculum development where appropriate; scholarly research and/or creative practice in the discipline; service to the department, the university and the field; and collegially contributing to the educational mission of the department and the university. The teaching expectation is four courses per academic year, with one course reduction annually the first four years of employment. Duties may include designing within the department’s season.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a relevant terminal degree (MFA or equivalent by August 15, 2023). Successful candidates will have significant lighting design experience in the profession, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and a commitment to mentoring students of diverse backgrounds and levels of experience. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the department by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the conversations and practices in our field and open the doors to a broad range of students and practitioners.

Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.
