College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP), Cornell University

Call for Applications: Strauch Fellows (one position each in Architecture, and in City and Regional Planning)

The College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) at Cornell University announces two positions for emerging scholars or practitioners with a keen interest in an academic career in architecture or urban planning. The Strauch Fellowship is a nine-month, full-time position in the department relevant to the Fellow’s field and discipline and will be located in Ithaca, New York. The Fellowships are part of AAP’s Broadening Participation Program, which aims to invest in early career scholars/practitioners for the purpose of developing robust pathways for diverse and impactful faculty in our disciplines. We invite applications from outstanding recent graduates of advanced degree programs in these two fields, pre-tenure track faculty, lecturers, or teaching faculty who are engaged in advancing inclusion, equity, and justice.

Each fellowship centers on research and teaching under the mentorship of a senior faculty member in the department where the Fellow is appointed. Responsibilities will vary by department based on the experiences, skills, and knowledge that are critical in preparing Fellows for future academic success (see below) and will include presenting research and work at an exhibition, community lecture or panel discussion, teaching, and participation in departmental and college activities through their appointment. This is a salaried position with benefits and a stipend for research-related expenses.  Additionally, the Fellows will have the opportunity to be part of a national cohort of other emerging scholars and practitioners participating in the Deans’ Equity and Inclusion Initiative. The Initiative brings together twenty-five leading U.S. schools and colleges of architecture, planning, and design, dedicated to creating a community of early-career faculty from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences, with attention to BIPOC and those underrepresented among the faculty in the field.

Strauch Fellow in the Department of Architecture are expected to have a professional or post-professional Master of Architecture or PhD in Architecture, will engage in research/creative practice, teach 2 studios and one seminar each year in their area of developing expertise, advise 2-4 thesis students each semester, and develop or partner on developing a community event or installation.

Strauch Fellow in the Department of City and Regional Planning are expected to have a PhD in Planning or a cognate discipline, engage in a research project, develop and teach two courses, one of which will be a seminar in their area of expertise each year, as well as create and deliver a public lecture and plan a symposium in partnership with their mentor as part of the department’s research seminar series.

The College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) is one of Cornell University’s oldest colleges, and home to approximately 900 students, 100 visiting and full-time faculty, and about 60 staff members. We are committed to the belief that architecture, art, and planning are simultaneously intellectual, spatial, social, and material practices, and that leadership in the field demands both expertise in a specific discipline and broader knowledge across disciplines. Cornell’s Ithaca campus is the physical and academic center for AAP, but given the global nature of our interests, the college has extended its reach to include permanent programs in the historic center of Rome and New York City. AAP is committed to an inclusive and diverse community and an open learning environment that is free from bias. We embrace creative and analytic practices that challenge preconceptions and prejudice; encourage critical engagement with the many forms of built and creative culture; and defend the prerogative of our disciplines to ask difficult questions. For over a century, AAP has educated many influential theorists and practitioners in the United States. It continues to build its strength in research and teaching, and the Broadening Participation Program aims to take on the challenge of developing impactful faculty for the future.
