The Ohio State University invites applications for the Roy Lichtenstein Endowed Chair of Studio Art. This chair will reside in the Department of Art and have a research focus on Studio Art. The inaugural Lichtenstein Chair will be an established artist, appointable at the professor or associate professor level, with a distinguished exhibition record who, in the spirit of Roy’s legacy of innovative and original experimentation, crosses fluidly between disciplines and might work in a diversity of material and conceptual forms. The endowment provides discretionary funding for the Professor’s research, sponsorship of lectures, travel to conferences, work with graduate students and other similar expenses relating to professional projects.

The Department of Art offers the BA, BFA and MFA in Studio Art. The Roy Lichtenstein Endowed Chair will play an active role in all three programs.

The successful applicant will teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, and take an active role as an instructor and advisor to students at all levels. S/he will contribute to the academic life of the Department, College, and University through teaching, research, and service. An existing research agenda that reaches across traditional disciplinary boundaries is desirable, as this position offers opportunities for collaboration with faculty in other departments across the College and University, including the Department of History of Art, which is conducting a simultaneous search for the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation Endowed Chair of Art History.

About Roy Lichtenstein:

Roy Lichtenstein matriculated into Ohio State’s College of Education, School of Fine and Applied Arts in 1940. He received his BFA in 1946 and his MFA in 1949. He also taught studio courses in the School of Fine and Applied Arts between 1946 and 1951. The two endowments, a gift from the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, will serve to recognize the formative influence Ohio State played in the development of the talent and aesthetic interests of the artist.

MFA or higher in Studio Arts or related degree and a substantial teaching / exhibition record that is national/international in scope and demonstrated innovative and experimental approaches to education are required for the position.
