The Pomona College Dance Department invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to teach and provide dynamic leadership in the area of Technique, Choreography, and Performance. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching Modern Dance Technique, Composition, Repertory, and one course from among the following: Somatic Movement Techniques, Anatomy and Kinesiology, Improvisation, or other area of related interest. The position requires an MFA degree, experience teaching in a college/university, a demonstrated ability to mentor a diverse student population, and a solid record of performance and/or choreographic achievement on the national/international level. The candidate will be expected to provide leadership and vision for the study of dance and movement in a broad cultural context and to further the active participation of the Pomona College Dance Department in the liberal arts curriculum throughout the Claremont Colleges. Our students come from a range of backgrounds and interests, and we value a demonstrated commitment to improving higher education for underrepresented students. The preferred candidate should demonstrate the desire to connect with our wide-ranging student body—adapting their pedagogy to engage with those who are coming to a dance class for the first time, while providing challenges for students with more experience. The position also includes advising of undergraduate research and senior projects.

Pomona College, a highly selective liberal arts college of approximately 1750 students, is a founding member of the Claremont Colleges, a unique constellation of five undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions, located thirty-five miles east of Los Angeles. The Dance Department, which enrolls approximately four hundred students per year, offers both a major (Performance or Movement Studies) and minor. Pomona College is a committed Equal Opportunity employer.

A complete initial application will include (1) a letter of interest in the position, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) graduate academic transcript(s), (4) three letters of recommendation, and (5) three brief statements (a) on the role of dance and movement study in the liberal arts curriculum, (b) one addressing scholarship and including your future directions, and (c) one addressing your experience and/ or ability to mentor a diverse student body.

Candidates may be invited to send a video sample at a later date. Please upload complete dossier to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/22392. Letter of interest should be addressed to John Pennington, Dance Department Chair, Pomona College, Pendleton Dance Center, 210 East 2nd Street, Claremont, CA 91711-6347.
