OVERVIEW: The Duke Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (Duke RBL) was designed to support basic research to develop drugs, diagnostics, and vaccines for emerging and reemerging infections and biodefense. 

The RBL has a comprehensive safety and operations program to provide state-of-the-art biocontainment facilities for laboratory and small animal studies at BSL2, BSL3, and to perform Tier 1 Select Agent research. The Duke RBL is comprised of three collaborative research units: Immunology; Virology; and Microbiology. 

We are recruiting a Senior Research Associate with broad microbiology and aerosol challenge model experience to lead active and pending sponsored research in the Duke RBL Microbiology Unit involving, but not limited to, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Chlamydia muridarum. RBL Microbiology focuses on bacterial aerosol challenge models in mice, isolation and screening of therapeutic antibodies, and minimum inhibitory concentration and colony forming unit assays. 

1. Design, develop and execute all required assays and model systems to meet the milestones of the research programs assigned to the Microbiology Unit by the RBL Director 
2. Prepare relevant animal use protocols, Institutional Biosafety Committee registrations, and CDC compliance documents. Ensure that all work is performed under DHVI/RBL-approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and that all Unit staff are trained and perform duties according to SOPs. 
3. Develop and implement standard operating procedures and lead in development, optimization, qualification and validation efforts for assays and procedures, as requested by the research sponsor / RBL Director. 
4. Research new products, tests, and methods and report on relative feasibility, quality, and benefits of new developments. Work to improve/optimize existing SOPs.  
5. Facilitate collaborations/interactions with the other scientific teams and collaborators/subcontractors working on RBL projects. 
6. Organize and present complex data sets to the sponsored research PI/RBL Director and programmatic leadership team. 
7. Summarize completed protocols and studies; write scientific articles and manuscripts for publication and presentation. 
8. Supervise and mentor lab staff, students and fellows as assigned. 
9. Monitor progress of research projects and coordinate with the Program Manager to stay on budget and schedule to meet the project milestones and deliverables. 
10. Perform other duties as requested by the RBL Director, DHVI COO and DHVI Director. 

1. PhD or equivalent doctorate (e.g, ScD, MD, DVM), 5+ years postdoctoral training or experience conducting scientific research in the field of microbiology with multiple publications; Expertise with in vitro assays, in vivo models, and molecular techniques. 
2. Willing and able to: 
a. Perform laboratory work at BSL2 and BSL3 
b. Work with small animals handled at ABSL2 and ABSL3 
c. Comply with vaccination requirements when necessary 
d. Complete US Department of Justice screening for Select Agent registration 
e. Complete Select Agent registration at Tier 1 
f. Achieve external certification for independent work at BSL3 and ABSL3  

1. Small animal aerosol challenge using a Madison Chamber 
2. Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working with international collaborators 
3. Proficient in scientific writing: grant proposals, progress reports, standard operating procedures, poster and oral presentations.
