The particle-physics group at SMU is inviting applications for a position of a postdoctoral research associate on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The successful applicant will be expected to take on leadership roles in physics data analysis, detector construction and operation, in particular the following areas: (a) the studies of the Higgs Boson in the photon, lepton and jet final states; (b) the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model; (c) the ATLAS detector upgrade for the high-luminosity LHC where SMU takes the responsibility of detector data transmission ASIC and system developments, installation and commissioning; (d) the ATLAS detector operation. The applicant will be joining the existing data analysis efforts already at SMU while be encouraged to initiate her/his own physics topics in line with the expertise that is at SMU. This is especially important in the preparation for data of Run 3, that is, the 14 GeV data collection after the ATLAS detector Phase-I upgrade. She or he will also be expected to join the upgrade program, work with the technical staff at SMU and contribute to either the electronics/firmware work in detector construction, or the installation and commissioning of the Liquid Argon Calorimeter (LAr) trigger upgrade. A demonstrated well-rounded training in both instrumentation and data analysis is essential for young physicist’s future career. We anticipate periods of residence both at SMU in Dallas and at CERN. A Ph.D. in high energy physics or a closely related field is required. Salary will be competitive.

Interested applicants should send a curriculum vitae and description of research interests, and arrange for 3 letters of reference, to Lacey Breaux at Further information about this position can be obtained by contacting this email address and directing your inquiry to Profs. Allison Deiana, Stephen Sekula, Ryszard Stroynowski, and Jingbo Ye. Applications received before Jan. 31, 2021 are guaranteed full consideration, but further applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

The SMU ATLAS group pursues a strong and exciting research program in Higgs sector physics as well as the detector related work in LAr, ITK-pixel, and Trigger/Data-Acquisition (TDAQ) systems. We host well-recognized electronics and firmware labs with experienced staff for the hardware work. We have prominent roles such as run-coordinators in operations in some of the areas listed above.

SMU will not discriminate in any program or activity on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, sexual orientation, or gender identity and expression.
