Post-doctoral researcher - Full Time Position (40 hrs per week), Duke University Project Title: Evaluating the social impacts of marine conservation Background: Responsibilities: This post-doctoral research focuses on evaluating the social impacts of a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) within the Sunda Banda Seascape, Indonesia. The post-doctoral researcher will join an interdisciplinary team of academics and practitioners focused on applying evidence-based insights into marine conservation policy and management. The researcher will be based at the Duke Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina, conducting econometric analyses on compiled field observational data, and supervised by Dr. David Gill (Assistant Professor). In addition to this focal project, there will be opportunities to engage in other research projects. Some of the research tasks include:
• estimating the human wellbeing impacts of MPAs on coastal communities in Indonesia;
• econometric analyses and modelling of household data;
• processing and managing social datasets (including geo-spatial data) on marine conservation activities;
• data quality assurance and control;
• preparing scientific manuscripts and presentations;
• assisting with the preparation of summary reports;
• performing other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

• Doctoral Degree in Economics (including Resource, Development or Environmental Economics), Resource Management, Marine Science, Environmental Studies/Science, Bioinformatics, or other related social science fields
• Excellent skills in statistical modelling and analysis, particularly econometrics
• Experience in causal inference, impact evaluation methods
• Strong research skills, particularly in data analysis, quality-control, and data management.
• Experience with programming or scripted analysis such as R, Stata, or similar language
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently
• Strong initiative and problem-solving skills
• Ability to travel to Indonesia Preferred (but not required):
• Experience in collaborative coding in R and version control tools such as GitHub
• Strong interest in applied research and marine conservation
Terms:
• Position will start as soon as possible but start date is flexible.
• Initial appointment is for one-year, with potential for a two-year position contingent on performance and funding.
• Salary is commensurate with experience.
• Work takes place at the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina.
