The College of Engineering at The Ohio State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Engineering Education.  The department seeks a leader who can realize our vision of becoming the foremost department in the education of engineering students grounded in the principles of inclusive excellence. 

Department Overview:  The Department of Engineering Education is the newest department in the College of Engineering at Ohio State since its creation in 2015.  The doctoral program, approved in spring 2018, has a robust enrollment and already counts four PhD graduates.  The Department of Engineering Education mission includes advancing the engineering profession and enabling student success by:  
  • Conducting and disseminating world-class scholarship in engineering education 
  • Mentoring doctoral student scholars in engineering education 
  • Modeling and advocating scholarly, evidence-based teaching within the College of Engineering, and 
  • Developing and delivering state-of-the-art, innovative, multidisciplinary courses and programs in first-year engineering, engineering technical communication, multidisciplinary capstone design 

Looking towards the future, the Department of Engineering Education is poised to grow, innovate, and lead both within the college and across the field.  The Department will add unique value to the broader engineering education community through innovative discovery, practices and leadership. 

College Overview:  The College of Engineering has about 10,000 students and offers 14 undergraduate and 13 graduate degrees in 12 engineering departments, as well as three undergraduate and four graduate degrees in the Knowlton School of Architecture. The College has recently expanded its degree offerings with a BS in Engineering Technology available at the university’s regional campuses. The College is one of the largest and most impactful institutions in the field with 405 engineering and architecture faculty members. The College has 14 National Academy of Engineering members and numerous fellows of societies and award recipients. In fiscal year 2020, the College had more than $138 million in externally sponsored research expenditures. Industry R&D expenditures for the College of Engineering in fiscal year 2020 totaled over $43 million.

Position Overview:  The Chair of the Department of Engineering Education should be a bold leader who can envision innovative ways for the department to educate the next generation of diverse engineering leaders. The Department of Engineering Education Chair uses their effective communication and interpersonal skills to lead a faculty that currently includes 7 tenure track faculty, 1 research track faculty, 4 clinical track faculty, and 19 full-time lecturers.  It is anticipated that the Department will grow in size and influence over the next 5 to 10 years.  Through their strong record of ethical behavior, integrity and transparency, the Chair cultivates and sustains an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment that encourages people to meet their full potential, including through faculty and staff development, hiring and retention, and undergraduate and graduate student recruitment and retention.  The Chair, who reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering, is responsible for all administrative, budgetary, and personnel decisions within the Department, and will be responsible for leadership, management, and strategic vision for the next phase of the Department’s growth. 

Required Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate in engineering education, engineering, or a closely related field  
  • The professional qualifications and credentials necessary to be appointed at the rank of full professor in the Department of Engineering Education 
  • Demonstrated expertise as an innovative scholar in engineering education research characterized by robust external funding and publications in top disciplinary journals 
  • A demonstrated record of, and strong commitment to, cultivating an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment 

Desired Qualifications:
  • Ability to develop, articulate and execute a strong strategic vision for the Department of Engineering Education and to lead cultural changes in support of this mission 
  • Experience in leading people and managing academic programs and budgets 
  • A collaborative leadership style that builds and grows relationships within, and between, the Department, College and University, and external stakeholders, such as alumni, parents, business, government and the local community
  • A commitment to academic excellence and interdisciplinary education at the undergraduate and graduate levels 
  • A commitment to collaborative research and a track record of competitive research funding from a variety of sources 
  • A record of service to, and leadership of, the profession within a university or research organization 
  • Demonstrated ability and/or previous experience working collaboratively with college and university administrators and leaders to achieve departmental goals and objectives
  • A history of engaging in national or international partnerships, entrepreneurial activities, industrial partnerships, and/or external fundraising
