The research scientist will run a recently funded, five-year Macrosystems grant aimed at understanding patterns in greenhouse gas production and flux using the NEON (National Ecological Observatory Network) dataset, then testing the scalability of these patterns to predicting GHG flux continuously within the NEON dataset as well as at the continental scale. Approaches will include analysis of water chemistry, hydrologic and gas data, modeling of stream metabolism, estimation of groundwater – surface water exchange using pressure data and isotopes, and analysis of geomorphological and catchment data using high resolution DEMs, imagery, and surveys. The scientist is expected to use temporal and multivariate approaches, potentially applying Bayesian modeling frameworks and machine learning regression models.

A primary goal of the proposal is to make ecosystem data and models more accessible to the wider community by working with a team of data scientists and collaborators, and thus the research scientist will benefit from interaction with and contribution to the existing Macrosheds team. Secondly, the scientist will be expected to recruit and supervise one undergraduate student annually as part of Duke’s Data+ summer training initiative.

Candidate should have a PhD in biogeochemistry, aquatic ecology, or a related discipline and prior postdoctoral experience and ideally, comfort working with large datasets.
