Duke Kunshan University invites applications for faculty positions (rank open) teaching Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) in its Language and Culture Center. In summer 2018, DKU will launch an innovative, integrated and interdisciplinary liberal arts undergraduate program leading to both Duke and DKU degrees. For this new program, Language and Culture Center faculty will provide Chinese language instruction to international students, faculty, and staff. Positions begin in summer 2018.

All candidates must have a graduate degree, MA or PhD, in a relevant field such as foreign language teaching (teaching Chinese or other languages), and have experience teaching Chinese or other languages. In addition to a mastery of written and spoken Chinese, candidates should also have strong English skills. Preference will be given to candidates who have also studied the following:

  • Language learning (especially motivation and language learning strategies).
  • Chinese culture (literature, history, etc.), especially relating to the culture of the Jiangnan region.
  • Intercultural communication.

 

Preference will be given to candidates who, in addition to Mandarin/Putonghua and English, also speak other languages, including other major varieties of Chinese (e.g. Shanghainese, Suzhounese, Cantonese). Similarly, a record of scholarly activity, such as publication or conference presentation, while not essential, is an asset.
