Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University. BSA salutes our veterans and active military members with careers that leverage the skills and unique experience they gained while serving our country. Our organization fully supports service members transitioning from active duty to civilian life and pledge’s our commitment to actively hire veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Military personnel who have been formally trained or have relevant experience obtained while in service may meet educational requirements and are encouraged to apply for job opportunities at BSA.

Organizational Overview

The High Energy Theory (HET) Group has active programs in all areas of Particle Physics, including Standard Model and beyond and lattice gauge techniques. We seek applicants with a strong record of research accomplishments in Particle Physics Phenomenology.

Position Description

This position will support the USQCD Lattice Gauge Theory SciDAC-5 project “Multiscale Acceleration: Powering Future Discoveries in High Energy Physics.” In this role you will assist BNL researchers and external institutions with the development of new multigrid solvers for domain wall fermions, in a project spanning theoretical physics, mathematics and computing science. Additional assistance will also contribute to developing new domain decomposed hybrid Monte Carlo sampling algorithms suited for future exascale computers. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

-Develop novel multiscale algorithms for Lattice Gauge Theory

-Develop multigrid algorithms for domain wall fermions, working with domain experts in the SciDAC institutes and PETSc project

-Develop DDHMC algorithms for exascale computers

-Document research results and conduct presentations at meetings and conferences

-Prepare and deliver oral presentations, as well as write articles in scientific journals

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-PhD in Lattice Gauge theory, Physics

-Demonstrated track record of publications

-Clear and concise oral and written communication, presentation and interpersonal/analytical skills

-Demonstrated programming skills in C or C++

-Strong collaboration skills to plan and perform advanced scientific investigations in pursuit of scientific and technological excellence Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-Experience in Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms

-Experience of numerical linear solver algorithms (Krylov solvers or Multigrid methods)

-Experience in high performance and GPU computing software development

OTHER INFORMATION:

-The candidate chosen would be hired for a term appointment of three years, under the supervision of project PI Peter Boyle and Sally Dawson, Group Leader, High Energy Theory Division.

-Initial three-year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding

-While the successful candidate is expected to be based at BNL, the position may require occasional domestic and international travel.

-Review of applications will begin immediately with a submission deadline of December 20, 2022.
