Duke University Press (DUP) seeks a Journals Marketing Manager to oversee day-to-day operations of the journals marketing team, which provides marketing, sales, and publicity support for all DUP journal titles as well as for several electronic book and journal collections sold by DUP. The Journals Marketing Manager supports and expands DUP’s mission of widely disseminating our academic content, as well as working to meet DUP’s annual revenue goals. This position reports to the Director of Marketing, Sales & Finance, and supervises a team of five people.

I. Strategic Planning (15%) ● Stay abreast of trends in the scholarly publishing market; propose and implement new marketing strategies based on market demands ● Work with Marketing, Sales, and Finance (MSF) Director and co-managers to advance short-term and long-term goals in alignment with Press-wide goals ● Lead strategic planning sessions for Journals and Collections Marketing team; develop and maintain strategic roadmap and project calendar ● Develop marketing and publicity strategies and results-tracking for journal issues, journals, 14+ electronic collections, and partner products such as the Scholarly Journals Collaborative and Project Euclid ● Manage project workflows and timing for the journals and collections marketing team; coordinate team’s efforts; develop and lead marketing campaigns

II. Staff Management (20%) ● Coordinate day-to-day activities of the Journals and Collections Marketing (JCM) team, including web marketing, material design and creation, social media marketing, exhibit planning, direct marketing, advertising, marketing metadata maintenance and creation, usage reporting, and publicity ● Provide guidance for team members on prioritization of projects; balance workloads across team ● Conduct performance reviews; set staff goals and development plans ● Identify opportunities for team members to serve on Press-wide projects; serve as information resource ● Ensure that team members maintain documentation for their responsibilities; maintain documentation for managerial responsibilities ● Revise or craft new job descriptions, as needed, and recommend structural changes for department ● Hire and train new staff; manage vacancies

III. Marketing Direction (20%) ● Ensure consistency of Duke Press Journals and Collections branding across materials and web locations ● Serve as project manager for annual pricing launch ● Supervise and support ongoing development and use of analytical reports to measure success of marketing efforts ● Collaborate with Journals Director and MSF Director to ensure that marketing and publicity needs of the editorial offices and societies are met ● Manage print runs for promotional sales quantities, based on historical trends ● Manage journals participation in books seasonal catalog (liaise with editorial offices; lead journal selection process; assign and create catalog copy; compile artwork)

IV. Relationship Management (15%) ● Editorial Offices o Serve as primary marketing liaison for ~60 editorial offices and societies o Vet marketing requests; coordinate with Journals Director as needed o Receive marketing questionnaires and other informational materials o Assign or implement requests for materials and exhibit presence o Present marketing program to editorial offices during site visits o Review annual marketing reports for societies and editorial offices

● Partner Publishers o Serve as primary liaison for publishing services partners for Marketing, Sales, and Finance Group o Develop specific marketing services package; oversee onboarding of new partners o Ensure visibility in library markets

● Vendors o Represent JCM team interests with DUP product managers and vendors o Oversee print-on-demand subscription program with outside vendor (freelance) support o Select, onboard, and manage freelance copyediting or design, as needed

V. Infrastructure (10%) ● Represent JCM’s business needs to Web Core Team and Web Platform Manager ● Plan and implement training for introduction of new technologies or software to JCM team ● Create and maintain documentation of department workflows and systems ● Advocate for additional resources and support from other DUP departments ● Serve as manager on various projects, on an as-needed basis

VI. Journal Acquisitions Outreach (10%) ● Lead branding efforts for journal acquisitions program; work closely with Journals Acquisitions editor to support efforts ● Create marketing proposals for prospective journals ● Incorporate newly acquired journals into marketing activities

VII. Product Development (5%) ● Collaborate with director and co-managers on the development and implementation of new products and revenue streams ● Manage marketing efforts and promotions for new products

VIII. Project Management (5%) ● Expense Budgeting o During budget and re-budget processes, project marketing expenses for the JCM team, for electronic o collection products, and for approximately 60 direct journal lines o Administer, track, and manage expense budget in SAP; report quarterly o Coordinate with budget stakeholders; suggest shifts in funding as necessary o Approve expenses for Journals and Collections Marketing team

● Other Related Duties o Serve on committees as needed o Attend academic or trade meetings as DUP representative

Education/Training: Work requires a general business background generally equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a business-related field.

Experience: Work requires four years related business or administrative experience to acquire competence in a variety of activities related to marketing and planning. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
