Duke University Press (DUP) seeks an Accounting & Budget Analyst to assist DUP’s Associate Director of Finance with complex reports and processes, in support of the Press’s mission. The Accounting & Budget Analyst assists with preparation of operational budgets, and prepares and coordinates distribution of various financial reports and analyses.

Remote work is supported for this position throughout North Carolina, as well as in the following locations: AZ, CA, CO, DC, FL, GA, HI, IL, MA, MT, MD, NJ, NY, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA.

Primary Job Responsibilities: I. Accounting Team Processes • Perform reconciliations on all assigned balance sheet accounts valued at millions, per the established schedule; maintain familiarity to serve as backup with unassigned accounts. • Set up new-book profiles in Advantage database, using contract and transmittal specifications (job cost code; coupon code; royalty records; advance payment research & entry; subject codes; price codes; etc.) • Provide reporting of sales, COGS, royalties, advances, etc. • Assist with vendor management activities and payments. • Review and provide initial approval for journal voucher uploads. • Serve as accounting team backup representative for DUP working committees (Advantage, Title Management and website); report significant developments to DUP’s Associate Director of Finance for review and approval. • Work directly with Associate Director of Finance in the development of $20,000 departmental budgets and forecasts; make recommendations on process and product improvement. • Serve as a subject-matter expert on accounting processes, workflows and systems, and propose changes as requested by supervisor; assist in training DUP staff regarding accounting processes, workflows and systems.

II. Financial Reporting • Prepare monthly sales report for review by DUP’s Associate Director of Finance. • Prepare month-end reports for book sales, sales and COGS, inventory, free books, frontlist and top accounts. • Prepare data extractions from SAP Business Warehouse for reports and budgets. • Work with Associate Director of Finance to analyze and create reports and analyses as needed, from design to output; including specialized reporting for DUP’s senior leadership.

III. Operational Budget • Extract all data (journals expense; operating accounts) and post for access by DUP departmental directors. • Create consolidated, coordinated report and update through all budget development, modification and reconciliation processes; submit to Associate Director of Finance for review and approval. • Assist with budget entry into Duke’s Performance-Based Financing system (PBF). • Prepare Journals P&L and financial statements for EOY, and submit to Associate Director of Finance for approval. • Prepare EOY DSE budget and financial statement, and submit for review and approval.

Department-Preferred Competencies: Strong supervisory skills, with a proven track record of customer service excellence; SAP/R3 (Duke University Financial System); Advantage (Books & Journals software, Duke University Press); Title Management software; Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Excel/pivot tables; Email and calendar software; Budget entry and reporting experience.

Education/Training: Work requires a general business background generally equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a business-related field.

Experience: Work requires 2 years related business or administrative experience, to become familiar with general personnel practices, accounting and budgeting principles, and coordination of major office activities. A master's degree in a business-related field may be substituted for 2 years of experience. OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
