Duke University Press (DUP) seeks a Journals-Senior Managing Editor to work as part of the Editing, Design, and Production group (EDP). Reporting to the Editorial Production Manager, the Journals-Senior Managing Editor manages the editorial staff of DUP’s journals program, overseeing the work of assistant managing editors and production editors. The Senior Managing Editor works with EDP’s journals production team to establish and manage schedules for all DUP journals; and, as a member of the EDP management team, works with other EDP managers to support our scholarly publishing efforts across multiple platforms, for print and digital media.

Candidates for this role should have a record of leadership skills, solid editorial and project management skills, and experience in scholarly publishing. Experience in math editing and, in particular, familiarity with LaTeX is strongly preferred.

Remote work is supported for this position throughout North Carolina, as well as in the following locations: AZ, CA, CO, DC, FL, GA, HI, IL, MA, MT, MD, NJ, NY, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA.

Primary Job Responsibilities: I. Editorial Process & Staff Management (30%) • Along with the Editorial Production Manager (EPM), interview and hire editorial staff, temporary staff, and student workers. Train staff as necessary and manage performance of direct reports. • In support of our core values of diversity, equity, and inclusion and our mission to share the ideas of bold, progressive thinkers in emerging and vital fields of scholarship, develop editorial policies that reinforce diversity in scholarship, identify and edit out discriminatory language, and address bias in academic writing. As a manager, seek diversity in recruitment and hiring; welcome and fully engage staff of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and perspectives; and foster a workplace of belonging. • Manage staff workloads; review and balance work assignments; outsource work as necessary; hire new staff as necessary. • Manage consistency in editorial standards, procedures, and training; editorial-technological procedures; and use of outside copyediting and proofreading services for Duke journals. • Help set editorial standards with EPM and monitor editorial quality of Duke journals. • Answer queries from assistant managing editors and production editors within journals EDP as well as authors and editorial office staff. • Help manage and develop checklists and guidelines for internal editorial work by assistant managing editors and production editors. • Guide and help set agenda for weekly Journals Editorial team meetings. • Act as departmental administrator of journals workflow management system for math journals. • Troubleshoot with assistant managing editors and production editors to resolve author and editorial office issues; coordinate with EPM and journals production manager to keep journal schedules on track.

II. Editorial Workflows and Editorial Office Relationship Management (30%) • Review style guides of DUP journals regularly; ensure that style guides are consistent, up-to-date, and support DUP and EDP editorial and publishing processes and practices; suggest changes as necessary to support new business initiatives. • Coordinate manuscript, proof, and electronic workflows with Journals Production team. • Work with Journals Production team to create the yearly publication schedules of all journal issues; problem-solve to keep issues on time. • Develop, update, and maintain training documents. • Maintain updated submission guidelines for editorial offices; serve as escalation point for queries that assistant managing editors can’t resolve. • Along with other EDP managers and Senior Project Editor, manage onboarding of new journals into DUP: initiate contact with editorial offices, assess editorial guidelines, review and revise editorial style sheets, work with Journals Production team on schedule for the first volume, and participate in regular journals management meetings throughout first year of onboarding.

III. Electronic Production (20%) • Develop and help manage protocols between Editorial and Production in-house journals EDP staff for complete and thorough manuscript preparation for print and online production; as necessary, make recommendations and institute changes arising from business needs. • Engineer workflows to incorporate new technological capabilities and expectations from authors, editorial offices, hosting platforms, and vendors, as they develop. • Help develop and manage quality assurance protocols and processes for online publication of articles and issues; provide feedback to vendors; ensure timely delivery of files to conversion vendors and content asset management vendors. • Facilitate ongoing and new electronic initiatives and Press-wide projects, ensuring that editorial concerns are taken into consideration.

IV. Financials (20%) • With the EPM, analyze and manage freelance editorial, proofreading, and JPS (ejournal Press tracking software) costs for an annual spend of approximately $275,000. • Meet annual budget goals for journals editorial expenses; track costs quarterly; run SAP reports monthly and report to EPM and EDP director. • Maintain and manage protocols and documentation for complete and accurate accounting records of all invoices paid for departmental archiving.

V. Other Related Duties • Serve on hiring committees for EDP staff; serve as EDP representative on any e-publishing and asset management committees; work with various committees and managers on publications management issues. • Travel to meetings and conventions to represent Duke University Press; take an active role on relevant committees of professional organizations. Establish connections with peers at other university presses for purposes of comparison and for gathering ideas and data to actively engage in joint online-publishing initiatives.

University-Required Education/Training: Work requires communications, analytical, and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

University-Required Experience: Work generally requires three years of editorial experience in a publishing or related setting to acquire skills necessary to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks, such as copyediting; researching and evaluating technical or scientific manuscripts for accuracy, clarity, content, and completeness; monitoring production schedules; proofreading galleys and page proofs; and checking layout and illustrations.
