Extension Associate – Yang-Tan Institute

Position is located in Ithaca, NY, within the ILR School on the campus of Cornell University.


The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an opening for an Extension Associate in the K. Lisa Yang and Hock E. Tan Institute on Employment and Disability in the Extension/Outreach Division.

This position of Extension Associate within the K. Lisa Yang and Hock E. Tan Institute on Employment and Disability (YTI) in the Extension/Outreach Division of the ILR School is responsible for developing and delivering programs and services that are closely aligned with the strategic mission and core values of the ILR School, and for monitoring quality, impact, and outcomes of education, training, technical assistance, consulting and research activities of the program.

The position’s primary focus will be as Project Director for the I-WORK research demonstration, a grant funded by the NYS Education Department (USDOE) at .50 FTE, as well as a Training and Organizational Development Associate for the Diversity Partners initiative, a grant funded by the U.S. Health and Human Services, at .40 FTE and NYS Consortium for Advancement of Supported Employment (NYS CASE) professional development initiative at .10 FTE.

Extension Associate is a non-tenure track, academic term position with up a one-year initial appointment.  The position may be reappointed on the basis of recommendations by the appropriate Executive Director, Director and Associate Dean as well as available funding and work.  

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Provide primary day-to-day management and oversight of the I-WORK demonstration scope of work and work collaboratively with the Project Manager to design, implement and track progress of the project management plan.

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of training and informational materials on issues pertaining to the I-WORK demonstration, as well as media production.

  • Oversee project deliverables across project related personnel and contribute to performance reviews as related to I-WORK scope.

  • Collaborate with ACCES VR leadership in I-WORK implementation and synthesize I-WORK data and materials. 

  • Contribute to the development of the I-WORK management information system.

Diversity Partners:

  • Design and implementation of high quality instruction design programs and training content
  • Builds collaborative networks with partners and networks around the country

  • Marketing and promoting services

  • Policy analysis and training

  • Completes needs identification with partners and networks and designs programs to meet those needs

  • Leads and contributes to grant writing efforts

  • Contributes to publications

  • Key advisor to program design and implementation

  • Contributes to the development and analysis of research instruments and program evaluation tools

  • Collects and analyses program data


  • Develop training materials to supplement the Diversity Partners JIT Toolkit and create Tier V programming for NYS CASE

  • Conduct a series of webinars to launch utilization of the Diversity Partners Toolkit with ACCES VR employment services professionals

YTI Generally:

  • Meet regularly with PIs of assigned sponsored work to promote effective communication and shared leadership.
  • Contribute to development of quarterly and annual reports for primary funding agencies; prepare information for project web-based reporting mechanisms.
  • Contribute to news releases, and project-related articles.
  • Write articles for scholarly peer-reviewed publications, trade and practitioner/advocacy journals.
  • Contribute to collaborative grant writing. 
  • Other duties and projects as assigned by the YTI Executive Director.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in social work, rehabilitation counseling, disability studies, instructional design, adult education, or other related field.
  • Minimum of two years delivering case management and/or family coaching to SSI populations,
  • Minimum of two years conducting training to relevant target audience, as well as providing consultation through the use of in-person, print, and electronic mediums.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and experience teaching both adult learners and youth. 
  • Experience in teaching and developing situated or distributed learning including online courses, and how to meet web accessibility requirements are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in collaborative environments and to contribute to the innovation and outcome success of a team.
  • Relevant professional leadership and network development at the state, regional, national, and/or international areas in relevant professional, trade, policy, or public networks.
  • Frequent travel required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in social work, rehabilitation counseling, disability studies, instructional design, adult education, or other related field.
  • Demonstrated writing ability and scholarly record in the thematic content area (articles in peer-reviewed journals, articles in trade publications, research and project reports, training manuals, informational brochures, policy briefs, etc.).
  • Expertise on the ADA and related pieces of disability nondiscrimination and employment legislation. 
  • Professional credentials in disciplinary area, such as appropriate state and national licensure, certifications, etc.
  • Minimum of one to three years demonstrated experience in successful grant writing and grant management.
