A post-doc position, in the fields of computational condensed matter physics and biophysics, is available at the Physics Department of the University of Genoa, Italy. The position will be funded by the ERC Starting Grant: 

BioMNP - Understanding the interactions between metal nanoparticles and biological membranes 

Project abstract. Metal nanoparticles (MNP) play more and more important roles in pharmaceutical and medical technology as diagnostic or therapeutic devices. Metal NPs can nowadays be engineered in a multitude of shapes, sizes and compositions. Despite such technological advances, there is still poor understanding of the molecular processes that drive the interactions of metal NPs with cells. Cell membranes are the first barrier encountered by NPs entering living organisms. The understanding and control of the interaction of MNPs with biological membranes is thus of paramount importance to understand the molecular basis of NP’s biological effects. BioMNP aims at rationalizing the complex interplay of NP size, functionalization and aggregation state during the interaction with model biomembranes. The project will rely on cutting-edge simulation techniques and facilities, and develop new molecular models to address NP-membrane interactions on a large range of length and time scales. 

Requirements. Candidates should have completed a PhD in physics, chemistry, bioengineering, material science or related areas. We consider as a strict requirement either one of the following: 
  • experience with Molecular Dynamics applied to soft matter systems 
  • good programming skills (C++, python). 

We will positively evaluate candidates with relevant experience in (bio)molecular model development (atomistic and coarse-grained level); molecular simulation of proteins and protein-nanoparticle interactions; molecular simulation of lipid membranes; molecular simulation of polymers; development of/familiarity with enhanced sampling methods. 

Depending on the candidate experience and preference, different aspects of the interaction between synthetic nanoparticles and biological matter may be the subject of the research work. The post-doc researcher is expected to directly supervise master and PhD students, and previous experience as a supervisor will be considered as a strength. 

The contract will have a duration of 1+1 years, renewable for a 3rd year, and will start in January, 2019 (adjustments are possible).
