Description

The Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of Architecture invites applications for the Director of the Digital Building Lab (DBL), one of the flagship research centers within the College of Design. The DBL is an internationally recognized leader in research areas that include design computation, data standards and interoperability, design and construction automation, project delivery systems and smart buildings, infrastructure and environments. The DBL is part of the Design Technology Research Group within the School of Architecture that also includes the High Performance Building Lab (HPBL) the Digital Fabrication & Robotics Lab (DFL), the Shape Computation Lab (SCL) and the Spatial Futures Lab (SFL). The work of DBL also includes researchers from other schools in the college (e.g. Building Construction and Industrial Design). DBL support comes from funded research, industry memberships and endowments. The director of the DBL works to advance the research dialogue on digital building through symposia,  annual member meetings, and engagement with School of Architecture graduate programs. The School is currently re-envisioning the structure and research agenda of the Design Technology group and the DBL Director will have an important role in this effort. The successful candidate is expected to assume the position in the Fall of 2020.

 

Title

Director of the DBL and tenure-track or tenured Professor in the School of Architecture. A joint appointment with another school (e.g., Civil and Environmental Engineering, Building Construction, or Interactive Computing) is possible, if appropriate.

 

Opportunities/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will serve as the Director of the DBL and will hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in the School of Architecture. The Directorship is a 10-month appointment and responsibilities include securing and conducting funded research, stewarding and growing DBL membership, successfully developing early career researchers, advising PhD students, and teaching graduate courses in candidate’s area of expertise. The Director will ensure that the development of DBL’s goals, objectives, strategies, performance indicators and targets, contributes to the success of the School of Architecture, College of Design and Georgia Tech. The Director will have oversight for DBL’s compliance with all Institute, state, and national policies, laws, regulations and guidelines.

 

Qualifications

Candidates should have demonstrated expertise and a successful record of publication on the application of digital technologies in architecture and construction, and a strong track record of sponsored research, industry collaboration, and teaching. Those with software development experience are particularly encouraged to apply. A professional degree in architecture or an allied discipline is required, and a Doctorate degree is preferred.

 

Salary

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

 

School of Architecture

The School of Architecture is one of five schools within the College of Design. Other schools include Building Construction, City and Regional Planning, Industrial Design, and Music. The SoA has over 350 students in five degree programs: B.S. in Architecture, Master of Architecture, M.S. in Architecture, M.S. in Urban Design, and a Ph.D. in Architecture.
