Duke University
Sanford School of Public Policy
Postdoctoral Researcher

Position Summary:
The Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research position in the area of energy and development, specifically in the areas of energy poverty / access and sustainable energy transitions.

The position is funded and has a one-year initial appointment, with possibility of renewal in future years.

The position entails work to support and lead certain aspects of the research portfolio of the James E. Rogers Energy Access Project (EAP) at the Nicholas Institute & Energy Initiative (which is co-led by Sanford School Associate Professor Marc Jeuland). The role will focus especially in supporting the research of the Powering Productivity and Healthy Communities workstream, and in particular to help lead a multi-year impact evaluation of an innovative solar mini-grid model being piloted to support rural irrigation development and technology enhancement in rural Ethiopia. In addition to this, the researcher will be encouraged to maintain their own active research portfolio especially as it provides complementary synergies with other EAP activities and themes. More information on the EAP is available at: https://energyaccess.duke.edu/

The scholar selected for this position will work closely with EAP faculty (including Drs. Marc Jeuland (EAP co-director), Robyn Meeks, Subhrendu Pattanayak, Dalia Patino-Echeverri, and Luana Lima) and with co-director Jonathan Phillips, to synthesize and provide new empirical evidence on global energy transitions and their impacts in low and middle income countries (LMICs).

Essential Functions:
The research position requires high-level synthesis of existing research, willingness to travel and lead international primary data collection activities, ability and interest in working with large datasets, and interest in working with interdisciplinary teams of researchers and to contribute to organizing research and policy workshops. The expectation is that the scholar would help lead an effort that will target publications in top social science and general science journals, and that will contribute to the prominence of complementary efforts such as the Sustainable Energy Transitions Initiative.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
- PhD in economics, environmental and/or resource economics, public policy, or a related field.
- Ability to analyze large datasets using advanced econometric and statistical methods.
- Strong interest in the issues related to energy and development.
- Ability to construct models for policy analysis is a plus.
