Occupational Summary 
The mission of the Center for Child and Family Policy is to contribute to solutions to important problems affecting today’s children and families, through an integrated system of scientific research, debate and dissemination, public service, and teaching. The Center emphasizes the bridge from research to policy and practice. 

The Center for Child and Family Policy has received funding from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) for an efficacy trial of a teacher professional development program in elementary schools in North Carolina and for a development project to create an online version of the teacher PD program for national dissemination. 

This comprehensive teacher PD program provides English as a second language (ESL) and classroom teachers with a framework for collaboration, skills for implementing high-impact instructional strategies, and approaches for incorporating families’ cultural wealth into the classroom. The PD program is based on research supporting teacher PD and includes Teacher Workshops, ongoing implementation coaching, and weekly collaboration sessions between the ESL and classroom teachers. Position Description 
The Duke Center for Child & Family Policy is seeking a curriculum developer/researcher with expertise in cultural wealth in classrooms and culturally responsive teaching to contribute to design, implementation, and evaluation of the teacher professional development program. 

This Research Scientist position will serve as part of a multi-disciplinary team with opportunities for leading data analysis and writing papers on cultural wealth and culturally responsive teaching. The ideal candidate will combine an expertise in equity-related education with a background in teaching, teacher education, curriculum development, early literacy, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, and online learning. The position is full-time but could be part-time depending on the needs of the Research Scientist. This is a grant-funded, two-year position, with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding. 

Work Performed 
 A detailed description of functional areas and tasks follows: 
  • Design and deliver teacher professional development workshops on integrating students’ cultural wealth into literacy instruction in the early elementary grades. 
  • Coordinate and lead parent panel in Spanish with Latino parents on cultural wealth and a strengths-based approach in schooling as part of teacher professional development workshops.
  • Conduct focus groups with school administrators, teachers, and parents to support the development of the online teacher professional learning program. 
  • Lead data management for survey data, student assessments, and interviews and focus groups.
  •  Analyze qualitative and quantitative data; create tables, graphs, and charts; contribute to the development of manuscripts for publication, funder reports, school district reports, and policy briefs.
  • Provide instructional design expertise for the development of online learning modules for teacher professional teacher development, especially related to cultural wealth in the classroom. 
  •  Support field staff in collecting classroom observation data and student assessments in English and Spanish.
  • Lead/participate in research team meetings, provide organization support including developing meeting agendas, task assignments, and work plans.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Position requires a PhD in a field related to education, curriculum and development, child psychology/child development, education policy/equity, or educational psychology.


·       Spanish/English bilingual required. Expertise in cultural wealth and culturally responsive teaching required.

In addition, the successful candidate will possess the following qualities/attributes:

·       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

·       Strong skills as a trainer/presenter

·       Knowledge of educational and/or early education systems

·       Experience with both qualitative and quantitative data analysis

·       Experience in public education

·       Ability to work well with diverse teams

·       Experience with English as Second Language (ESL) preferred
